The Confucius Institute, University of Wales

General information

Located at the University of Wales Lampeter, the first Confucius Institute in Wales was established by an agreement signed between the Chinese Language Council International (Hanban), the University of Wales Lampeter and Beijing Union University on 12 March 2007 and was officially launched in October 2007.

Teaching activities

The Confucius Institute, University of Wales, Lampeter, continues to foster good relationships with schools throughout mid Wales, working in partnership with them to deliver Chinese courses which meet the needs and interests of pupils and satisfy the demands of the national curriculum.

Cultural activities

October 2009 marked the 60th birthday of the People’s Republic of China, and UWL's Confucius Institute organized Wales' first nationwide festival of Chinese cinema, China Classic Film Festival, to celebrate the occasion. Besides the film festival, we also hosted the 09 New Year Celebrations and assisted 10 schools in their China Day or International Day activities. We are going to host the Nanjing National Orchestra Performance on 27th November.

Assisting Local Elementary and Secondary Schools

We hired 15 Chinese students and they are now teaching at primary and secondary schools. Every week, they attend 2 hour session training offered by the Chinese teacher from Beijing Union University.
