General information

Under the leadership and support of Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters, the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University was jointly constructed by North China Electric Power University in China and Suez Canal University inEgypt. The intention agreement of cooperation to build the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University was signed inMarch, 2007 by Hanban and Suez Canal University. With the approval of Hanban, North China Electric Power Universityand Suez Canal University formally reached an agreement in June, 2007 to jointly build the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University. In July, 2007, the board of directors of the Confucius Institute was established and its construction was initiated. On April 1, 2008, the unveiling ceremony of the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University was held in Ismailia,Egypt. Furthermore, the first anniversary celebration of the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University was held on April1, 2009. With successful unveiling ceremony, the Joint Training Center between Suez Canal University and China-Egypt Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone was formally established in Northwest Suez Special Economic Zone on October 10, 2010.

At present, the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University covers an area of more than 1,200 square meters,including four classrooms, three multimedia language labs, a reading room, a computer lab with 20 seats, a teacher’s office, a meeting room, and a conference hall that can accommodate over 200 people. All the teaching facilities were equipped.In order to support the development of the Confucius Institute, the Confucius Headquarters have offered over 8,000 books and 419,000 US dollars to the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University, including initial budget, 2009 project budget, 2010 project budget, Great Wall Chinese Multimedia Lab project budget, and book exhibition project budget.On June 14, 2009, He Guoqiang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of CPC and Secretary of CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, had a special meeting in Egypt with Chinese and Egyptian directors of the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University and presented the equipment of “Chinese Cultural Experience Center” to the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University on behalf of the Chinese government. In addition,North China Electric Power University sent the delegations at the president’s level to visit the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University in April, 2008 and in April, 2009 respectively and discuss the future development of the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University with Egyptian director during 2009 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Africa held in Kenya, so as to promote the joint construction of Confucius Institute.

Teaching activities

During the period of Confucius Conference in December 2008 and in December 2009, the leadership of North China Electric Power University held seminars with leadership of Suez Canal University to discuss further cooperation in the construction of Confucius Institute. In June,2009, the art delegation, composed of the students of North China Electric Power University, gave Chinese cultural and theatrical performance in five places in Egypt. Moreover, in July 2010, North China Electric Power University successfullyheld the Chinese Language and Culture Experience Summer Camp in Beijing and Baoding for 29 students and teachers from Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University.With great efforts, the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University has finished many effective activities to promoteChinese language and culture, in which a lot of undergraduates, teachers and administrators from Suez Canal University,Ain Shams University and Al Azhar University as well as government officials, business staff, sports players participated.Since its founding, the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University has held many Chinese courses in Ismailia,Cairo and even in Suez, including fourteen basic Chinese courses, nine primary Chinese courses, six intermediate Chinese courses, two advanced Chinese courses, eleven tourism Chinese courses, five Chinese courses for potential Chinese teachers, a business Chinese course, seven Chinese courses for enterprises, two music Chinese courses and three coaching courses for HSK examination. More than 1,100 students attended these Chinese courses. The number of students of the Confucius Institute has increased to 300 from 20 at the beginning. Since December 30, 209, the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University has formally become the official Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) site in Egypt and two HSK examinations were held respectively on May 16, 2010 and December 5, 2010 at the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University.On the other hand, a variety of Chinese cultural activities were organized, including three New Year and ChineseSpring Festival cultural activities, a Chinese riddle cultural activity, a cultural lecture on Chinese traditional festivals, alecture on China higher education, a China Education exhibition, eleven Chinese cultural and theatrical performances, aChinese language skill show, a Chinese debate on a specific theme, a Chinese songs singing competition, and a ChineseLanguage and Culture Experience Summer Camp. About 3000 people took part in these activities.As a result, the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University, honored with the title of best Confucius Institute in theArabic world for its popular Chinese language and cultural activities, has received special care, support and report fromthe news agencies such as China Today (Arabic Edition), Ismailia Provincial TV Station, Suez Canal TV station, and ChinaRadio International.Nowadays, the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University is further expanding Chinese language and cultural activities in Egypt, by way of combining Chinese teachers and Egyptian local teachers.

Being an important window for Egyptian people to understand China and learn Chinese language, the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University, a friendship bridge between China and Egypt, is playing more and more significant role in the exchange of education, culture, science, and economic trade between China and Egypt.
