The coronavirus pandemic is a common challenge facing mankind. As the world sees a growing number of COVID-19 cases, the Chinese partners of Confucius Institutes started to give their foreign institutions care and support through words of encouragement and donation.

“We believe with the joint efforts, we will prevail over the disease soon.”

From March 24, Nepal decided to enforce a national lockdown for a week to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Having learnt the news, Sun Zhanxue, Principal of East China University of Technology (ECUT) sent letters of sympathy to its Nepali partner Tribhuvan University and the Chinese Embassy in Nepal at the first opportunity, expressing his wishes and support for the staff of the Embassy and the faculty and students of the University.

In the letter, Sun Zhanxue said that the ECUT would do its utmost in sharing China’s experience in epidemic prevention and control, donate some medical supplies and strengthen communication with them, so as to work together to combat the virus.

In late March, Shanxi University in north China’s Shanxi province sent letters of sympathy to its foreign partner institutions, including East Timor Institute of Business, and University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) of the United States (US), and the Confucius Institute at the UNC Charlotte.

On March 25, Ma Huaide, Principal of China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) sent a letter to Marian Preda, Principal of the University of Bucharest of Romania, in which he expressed that he followed closely of the development of the COVID-19 in Romania and voiced his care for the CUPL’s foreign partner institution.

Phoenix Tour Srl Romania and Miniso Romania, local partners of Confucius Institute at the University of Bucharest, also donated masks to the faculty of the Confucius Institute. The faculty of the Confucius Institute expressed their heartfelt thanks, as well as voiced the confidence that with the joint efforts, they would prevail over the disease soon.

Zhao Hui, Principal of Bohai University in northeast China’s Liaoning province sent a letter of sympathy to Principal of its foreign partner institution, University of Bangui (Central African Republic).

In the letter, Zhao Hui expressed that the pandemic would eventually come to an end. The spirit of solidarity and mutual help forged in times of adversity would boost the development of Confucius Institute at University of Bangui (Central African Republic), and create new opportunities for the cooperation and exchanges between our two countries. Moreover, Bohai University also donated some medical masks to University of Bangui to help its partner fight the pandemic.

Since South Africa reported its first confirmed case of COVID-19 on March 5, the situation in South Africa has always pulled at Chinese universities’ heartstrings.

Zheng Baodong, Principal of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University in south China’s Fujian province, extended his best regards to Durban University of Technology (DUT) and the faculty of Confucius Institute at DUT.

Zheng Baodong expressed that as the Chinese partner of Confucius Institute at DUT, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University would make all-out efforts to support DUT and Confucius Institute at DUT in fully preparing for combatting the disease. He particularly quoted a line from a poem of Li Bai, one of the greatest Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty (618–907AD), to encourage all the Chinese staff members in South Africa to be indomitable and fearless of difficulties. He also expected to meet with all the staff members in the rainbow nation when the pandemic ends.

Love transcends borders. Let’s fight side by side and prevail over the disease with one heart.

As the pandemic is engulfing many parts of the world, a large number of Chinese partner institutions have actively collected medical supplies to support their foreign counterparts.

Considering the rampant spread of the COVID-19 worldwide, North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power in central China’s Henan province immediately contacted Confucius Institute at the University College of Technology Sarawak in Malaysia and provided help for UCTS within its capacity by donating 1,000 masks.

Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) actively supported its foreign partner institutions, too. Chair of the University Council He Xiuchao and Principal of the University Wang Yaoqiu sent messages of sympathy to them, and the university also collected N95 medical masks and medical gloves.

As a growing number of international routes were blocked by the COVID-19 outbreak, CUFE made enormous efforts to seek transportation channel. Finally, they had the medical supplies shipped to CUFE’s partner institutions in Greece and Brazil.

In the middle of March, two batches of medical supplies departed for University of Karachi of Pakistan, Yonsei University of South Korea, and Cadet College Petaro in Pakistan. It was worth noting that the supplies were attached with a line in Chinese and Urdu: “The friendship between China and Pakistan is higher than mountains, deeper than oceans and sweeter than honey,” and a line in Chinese and Korean that goes: “A bosom friend afar can never be taken apart.”

These supplies were donated by the Sichuan Normal University in southwest China’s Sichuan province, as it hoped to help its foreign partner institutions fight the pandemic.

Surging cases of COVID-19 overshadowed the UK and continental Europe. To render timely help to its foreign partner institution, Nanjing University and Beijing Language and Culture University donated tens of hundreds of medical masks and gloves to Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield in the UK. This will help the faculty of the Confucius Institute protect themselves.

Principal of Beijing Language and Culture University Liu Li immediately sent a letter of sympathy to Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield and another letter to Professor Koen Lamberts, Principal of the University of Sheffield. In the letter to his counterpart, he expressed care to all the members of the University of Sheffield fighting against the pandemic on behalf of Beijing Language and Culture University. He also firmly believed that no mountain would be too high for us to climb as long as we unite as one and have faith.

Capital Normal University was much concerned about its foreign partner institutions, too. Having tried various ways, it finally collected over 6,000 pieces of medical materials including masks, and then had them shipped to Confucius Institute at St. Petersburg National University in Russia, Confucius Institute at Ca' Foscair University of Venice in Italy, Confucius Institute at University of Piura in Peru, Confucius Institute at State University of New York at Buffalo City in the US, Confucius Institute in Bremen, Germany, and Confucius Classroom at the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual Primary School in Budapest, Hungary. Such timely help has made a difference for the epidemic prevention and control of these institutions.

Confucius Institute at Saint Thomas University, Chile received the medical supplies donated by Saint Thomas University’s Chinese partner, Anhui University in east China’s Anhui province on April 1, local time. Moved by such kindness, the teachers vowed to work even hare while protecting themselves.

Having learnt the situation in Egypt, Peking University donated a batch of surgical masks for the teachers of Confucius Institute at Cairo University, and has started to prepare the second batch.

Confronted by the common challenge of mankind, we are confident that with the joint efforts of various countries in the world, we will prevail over the pandemic soon.
