China Donates to Overseas Universities to Fight COVID-19

Recently, due to the spread of the COVID-19 worldwide, many countries have been affected to different degrees. As the co-partners of Confucius Institute, the presidents of many Chinese colleges and universities have sent letters to extend their sympathies to their partner universities and colleges overseas.Teachers and students also actively collected donated materials, sent sincere blessings in various forms, and joined hands with countries all over the world to fight against the pandemic.

“We Will Work Together to Surmount Whatever Difficulty That Lies Ahead and Fight Against the Pandemic”

On March 9, Beijing time, when acknowledging that Oregon was in a state of emergency, Zhang Xiaohong, Vice President of Soochow University, conveyed the sincere regards on behalf of Soochow University to Susan Jeffards, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Portland State University immediately, and asked if its cooperative university— theConfucius Institute at Portland State University was in need of any epidemic prevention supplies.

On March 12, Jiang Yong, Secretary of the CPC Committee of Soochow University , and XiongSidong, President of Soochow University, once again expressed concerns to all faculty and students of the Confucius Institute at Portland State University. They appreciated every teacher of the Confucius Institute for their commitment to their obligations in a foreign country. Furthermore, they decided to allocate resources immediately and donate 1,500 masks in case of urgent needs.

On March 13, upon learning that the United States had declared a state of emergency, Xu Yan, Vice President of Jiangnan University, promptly wrote to Dr. Joanna Regulska, Vice Provost and Associate Chancellor of Global Affairs at the University of California, Davis. Xu said that COVID-19 is a challenge for all mankind and Jiangnan University is willing to join hands with the University of California, Davis in the battle against the epidemic. On behalf of Jiangnan University, Xu Yan donated 2,000 medical masks and 5 electronic thermometers to University of California.

On March 14, Chen Jian, President of Jiangnan University, expressed his greetings and concerns to the faculty and students of the Confucius Institute at the University of California, Davis. He sincerely paid tribute to the teachers of the Confucius Institute for their hard work and outstanding achievements and added that they would provide help in earnest as a solid backing. Hearing that there is a shortage of medical masks and other materials in the United States, as well as the difficulty in purchasing them, Jiangnan University soon sent out a batch of supplies to support the Confucius Institute for epidemic prevention.

The expansion of the novel coronavirus around the world has also gripped the hearts of teachers and students of Zhejiang Normal University. Recently, Zheng Mengzhuang, President of Zhejiang Normal University(ZJNU), wrote to the University of Yaounde II in Cameroon, University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Temple University in the United States, University of the Western Cape in South Africa and other co-partners of Confucius Institutes, expressing his concerns and blessings to the presidents of these universities, along with the teachers and students of the above Confucius Institutes.

In the letter, Zheng Mengzhuang introduced the latest situation of domestic epidemic prevention and the countermeasures adopted by ZJNU to overseas partner universities. Meanwhile, he voiced his concern over the international fight against the COVID-19 in other countries and showed his firm confidence in winning the battle against the epidemic to stride ahead with overseas universities at this critical moment.

 

Meanwhile, Zhejiang Normal University immediately responded to their call, by raising a batch of anti-epidemic masks and sending them to Confucius Institutes oversea on March 18 and 20. The Chinese verse "云销雨霁,彩彻区明 (Every cloud has a silver lining)" was used to express the strong conviction of mankind to work together and fight the epidemic.

Office of Chinese Language Council International and the center for the studies of Africa of Zhejiang Normal University also held a video conference for the directors of the Confucius Institutes to fight against the epidemic, so as to maintain close intact with the teachers and students of the Confucius Institutes and pay careful attention to their physical and mental conditions. In this way, they built a "protective network" with practical actions.
