Directors of Confucius Institutes, Experts and Scholars: We Always Stand Beside China

In Spain, Richard Clouet, Vice-Chancellor of Las Palmas University, on behalf of the university, together with Xavier Lee, the Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute, Liu Xucai, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, and some of the teachers in the Confucius Institute, has recorded a video to cheer on China.

Richard Crouette said, “Chinese people are experiencing great difficulties due to the novel Coronavirus epidemic. On behalf of the university and all teachers and students, I would like to express our greatest solidarity and support to the Chinese people. Throughout the history of China, Chinese people have managed to overcome countless adversities. We firmly believe that Chinese people will definitely overcome the current difficulties. Stay strong China! Stay strong Wuhan!”

In Portugal, João Veloso, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Porto and Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute, said, “The development of the epidemic was indeed worrying. However, throughout history, human beings have always been facing the threats of different epidemics in various regions across the globe.”

“Today, due to advances in science, medicine and public health, we have better ways to deal with such problems. The Chinese people have gone through many very difficult times. I believe they will be able to deal with such complex issues in the best way. In the name of the long-term friendship between Portugal and China, we send our condolences to the Chinese people and relevant government departments, hoping that the impact of this epidemic on China’s economy and people’s daily life will be eliminated as soon as possible.”

“On behalf of the University of Porto and its Confucius Institute, I would also like to express our support and appreciation for the Chinese government’s efforts to curb the spread of the virus and mitigate its impact. I believe that through the cooperation between China and the international community, a greater epidemic can be avoided.”

David Pilsbury, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International Development) and Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at Coventry University, sent greetings to the Chinese people on behalf of his colleagues at the Confucius Institute, and said, “At this hard time, we are absolutely standing with you in China.”


Waheeb Al-Naser, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bahrain and Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute, said that the University of Bahrain has donated 10,000 masks to Shanghai University, hoping to make its contribution to China’s battle against the epidemic. With the support from all over the world, China will certainly overcome the difficulty.
