Confucius Institute at Comenius University Holds 2020 Spring Festival Gala and Unveiling Ceremony of Its Confucius Classrooms

On January 18th, local time, the Confucius Institute at Comenius University of Slovakia held the 2020 Spring Festival Gala and the unveiling ceremony of the Confucius Classroom of Chinese Martial Arts and the Confucius Classroom of the Technical University in Zvolen at the Dk Zrkadlovy Haj in the capital Bratislava. The Fudan University’s choir and the dance troupe, the students' art troupe of Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, the martial arts team of Slovak Kung Fu and TaiChi College have jointly presented wonderful theatrical performances for the celebration.


Dragon dance

On the afternoon of January 18th, the unveiling ceremony kicked off with a festive dragon dance. Jana Benická, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at Comenius University in Slovakia, introduced to the guests the operation of the Confucius Institute at Comenius University and her efforts in promoting Chinese education and spreading Chinese culture. She also expressed her gratitude to the partner college for their cooperation in setting up the Confucius Classrooms.

Qi Ming, Vice President of Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, a Chinese cooperative institution, said in his speech that Shanghai University of International Business and Economics had established three Confucius Institutes and an independent Confucius Classroom in four countries in Central and Eastern Europe--Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia and Czech. Shanghai University of International Business and Economics will continue to support the construction and development of Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms, strive to promote intercollegiate cooperation and make greater contributions to the promotion of Sino- Slovakia friendship.

Wang Ji, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim at the Chinese Embassy in Slovakia, extended New Year greetings to the guests on the spot, congratulating the opening of the Confucius Classrooms, welcoming Fudan University’s choir and dance troupe and the students' art troupe of Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, who have traveled long distances to Slovakia, and appreciating them for spreading Chinese culture to distant Europe with martial arts students in Slovak.

Subsequently, the guests present jointly unveiled the Confucius Classroom of Martial Arts and the Confucius Classroom of the Technical University in Zvolen.

At the Spring Festival gala, Fudan University Choir and Dance Troupe presented a Chinese classical dance “Scholars with Paper Fan in the Hand”, which combines traditional Chinese opera and martial arts and depicted a picture that inside the Confucian academy, the sound of reading was loud and clear and a group of teenagers were singing in the wind. The dance “Dunhuang Calligraphy” shows the exchange of Chinese and foreign civilizations on the Silk Road. “Xiang Ji Dance” is a famous dance in the royal court during the Spring and Autumn Period, which demonstrates the unique charm of Chinese dance. The dance “Memories of Youth” and singing and dancing “Loving Each Other” lead the audience into Chinese campuses and experience the life and youthful vitality of Chinese college students.

The ancient poetry choruses, “A Fisherman's Song” and “Song of the Yue Boatman”, which were brought by Fudan University’s choir and dance troupe showed the 3,000-year inheritance of classical Chinese writing in Chinese literature. “Message in the West Wind” and “Endless Love” reproduced the unique customs of the 1930s. In addition, “Youth without Regret”, an original campus song, which won the first prize of the choir in the 5th National College Students Art Show was also performed.

With passion and firmness, pipa and zither ensemble “Jasmine Fragrance” was performed by the student art troupe of Shanghai University of International Business and Economics. The ensemble of bamboo flute and zither “Spring on Xiang Jiang River” shows the spring of Xiangjiang River, with warm and bright spring days and the magnificent strength and beauty of Xiangjiang River. The ensemble of zither, flute, pipa, liuqin, erhu “The Clouds Chasing the Moon” vividly depicts the charming scenery and tranquility and harmony of the vast night sky.

In 5,000-year long history of China, there are not only love stories in poems and songs, but also heroic stories in swords. With Taji swords, Slovak martial arts players showed the audience a world of martial arts and the magnificence of martial arts.

After the performance, the Confucius Institute at Comenius University and two Confucius Classrooms held a reception for the Spring Festival 2020, inviting guests to try Chinese food and share the joy and happiness of the Spring Festival.
