Confucius Institute at the University of Saint Thomas, Chile Holds Chinese New Year Celebration

On January 10th, local time, a large-scale cultural performance, hosted by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of Chile and co-hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Saint Thomas, was held in the city of Vina Del Mar, which marks the closing ceremony of the annual Chinese New Year celebration held by the Confucius Institute at University of Saint Thomas.

The performance was held in the evening at Quinta Vergara Theater, a famous landmark of Vina Del Mar. Local artists and Chinese cultural lovers performed Tai Chi and played traditional Chinese musical instruments. The teachers and students from the Confucius Institute carried out contests on Chinese language and Chinese culture, and conducted interactive programs and lucky draw lottery, which fully mobilized the enthusiasm of audience for participation. During the show, nearly 20,000 local residents cheered "Happy New Year" in Chinese, demonstrating their love for China.

Shenzhen Art Troupe displayed a wonderful series of performances to the audience. They performed folk music, songs and dances, acrobatics and other programs which won warm applause and acclaim from the audience, who were reluctant to leave even after the performance had been finished for a long time. The audience took photos with the performerszealously on the stage after the show, giving their thumbs-up, and praised their fascinating performance.

Before the performance, Li Lian was interviewed by Xinhua News Agency and the local media.

In order to have a successful Chinese New Year celebration, the Confucius Institute made full preparations, with the participation of both the Chinese and foreign Deans and all the faculty members. The celebration was also promoted in social media and local radio stations. As part of the celebration, the Confucius Institute invited local dragon and lion dance troupes to perform in various public places in Vina Del Mar and surrounding cities every daystarting from January 3rd, attracting many local people to watch the performance and participate in the activities.
