Ceremony of 2nd Anniversary of Establishment of Confucius Classroom at Tbilisi Open University and Unveiling Ceremony of Confucius Institute Held

On December 21st, the ceremony of the second anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Classroom and the unveiling ceremony of the Confucius Institute were held in Tbilisi, Georgia. Archil Kalandia, Georgian Ambassador to China; Zviad Gabisonia, Director General of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia; and Li Yan, Chinese Ambassador to Georgia attended and addressed the ceremony. Principals of Chinese language teaching sites at Tbilisi's primary and secondary schools, representatives of China-funded enterprises in Georgia and local people from all walks of life participated in the event.

Giorgi Amilakhvari, Rector of Tbilisi Open University as well as Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute, expressed in his speech that the Confucius Classroom has become a window for Georgian people to learn about China, setting up a bridge of mutual understanding and communication between the two peoples, and also advancing exchanges and cooperation in culture and education between the two countries.


Address by Giorgi Amilakhvari

On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Georgia, Li Yan congratulated the establishment of the Confucius Classroom. She pointed out that under the Belt and Road Initiative, the Chinese language teaching at Georgiais facing new opportunities of development. The Chinese Embassy will, as always, support the work of the Confucius Institute and help to cope with its problems. The upgrade of the Confucius classroom into a Confucius Institute by the Confucius Institute Headquarters is both a recognition and encouragement of the achievements made by all parties. It is hoped that the Confucius Institute will continue to make further efforts, cooperate sincerely and make contributions to the development of the exchanges between China and Georgia.

Archil Kalandia expressed that Chinese language teaching in Georgia boasts a history of 30 years and has made great strides in its development. At present, the exchanges between Georgia and China in the fields of trade and investment as well as culture and education are getting increasingly closer. Learning Chinese well is conducive to enhancing Georgia's understanding of China, strengthening the friendship between the two peoples and further promoting the development of Georgia-China relations.

Zviad Gabisonia pointed out that the Confucius Institute not only promotes Chinese language and culture, but also brings about academic exchanges and cooperation. In the future, Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation will further strengthen its ties with the Confucius Institute, continuously advance its cooperation with Chinese universities, and make positive contributions to the development of education of both countries.

Lu Yujing, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, introduced the development of the Confucius Classroom. With more than 30 teaching sites and nearly 2,000 registered students, the Confucius Classroom has held over 100 cultural activities, achieving leap-forward development. The newly upgraded Confucius Institute will carry forward its glorious cause and forge ahead into the future, making greater contributions to the cultural and educational exchanges between China and Georgia.
