The Unveiling of Confucius Institute at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)

On December 12th, local time, the unveiling ceremony of the Confucius Institute at UMS was held by three founders, UMS, Changsha University of Science and Technology, and CCCC Dredging Group. The attendances were as follows: Mohammad Mohamarin, Assistant Minister of Education and Innovation of the Sabah State, Datuk Taufik Yap Yun Hin, Vice Chancellor of UMS, and Datuk Susan Wong SiewGuen, Liang Caide, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Kota Kinabalu, Fu Hongyuan, Director of the Affairs Committee of Changsha University of Science and Technology, Zhu Zhaohui, Chairman of the CCCC Dredging Group, and representatives of Chinese Malaysian from the Confucius Institute at UMS, as well as staff and students of UMS.

The unveiling ceremony started amid the national anthems of Malaysia and China. Taufik Yap Yun Hin and Fu Hongyuan delivered speeches successively. According to Fu Hongyuan, Changsha University of Science and Technology is willing to work with UMS and CCCC Dredging Group to establish an outstanding engineering Confucius Institute with its own characteristics in line with the requirements of the Confucius Institute Headquarters. At the same time, CSUST will conduct an intimate cooperation with the University Malaysia Sabah and CCCC Dredging Group in an all-round way in personnel training, scientific and technological research, and application.


The Speech by Fu Hongyuan

Liang Caide congratulated the establishment of the first Confucius Institute in East Malaysia, emphasizing the profound effects of Confucius's ideas that “We are all brothers and sisters living in one world”, “In practicing the rules of propriety, it is harmony that is prized”, and “harmony in diversity” on China's historical development and its national character. More than 500 Confucius Institutes around the world are committed to Confucius’ ideas that "In practicing the rules of propriety, it is harmony that is prized" and “harmony in diversity”, aiming to improve people's understanding of Chinese language and culture and promote cultural integration between China and other countries.


The Speech by Liang Caide

Mohammad Mohamarin said that on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, our cultural cooperation and people-to-people exchanges have brought about many achievements. The Confucius Institute is an effective way for global people to have a better understanding of Chinese culture. It’s believed that China and Malaysia can make more progress together in personnel training, scientific and technological research and other areas.

Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, sent his congratulatory letter. He hoped the two universities could continue to cooperate with devoted hearts to build the Confucius Institute at UMS into an important platform for the UMS students and the community residents to learn Chinese language and know more about China. In that way, the Confucius Institute at UMS can further boost cultural exchanges between the two countries and consolidate our friendship.


Ribbon-cutting ceremony

The ribbon-cutting ceremony signaled the formal establishment of the Confucius Institute at UMS. Then, the locally famous Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School brought performances of 24 seasons drum and lion dance, adding great zest to the live scene.

As the fourth Confucius Institute in Malaysia and the first Confucius Institute in East Malaysia, the Confucius Institute at UMS will join hands with Changsha University of Science and Technology and the CCCC Dredging Group in exploring the building of the Confucius Institute with engineering characteristics, which will further stimulate the local people's enthusiasm for learning Chinese and bring more personnel training and employment opportunities to Sabah State and even East Malaysia.
