First Confucius Institute in Antigua and Barbuda Holds Unveiling Ceremony

On December 1st, local time, the unveiling ceremony of the Confucius Institute in Antigua and Barbuda was held in Saint John's, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda. Nearly two hundred people attended the ceremony including Rodney Williams, Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda, Michael Brown, Minster of Education, Science and Technology of Antigua and Barbuda, Molwyn Joseph, Minister of Health of Antigua and Barbuda, Rosa Greenaway, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Stanford A. Griffith, Interim Principal of Five Islands Campus of the University of the West Indies, Arlene Weste, Head of Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education, and Sun Ang, Chinese Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, Hong Gang, President of Zhejiang International Studies University, Xu Yong, Vice Chairman of the University Affairs Committee of Zhejiang International Studies University, representatives from Chinese-funded enterprises and Oversea Chinese Associations, teachers and students. The unveiling ceremony was jointly hosted by both Chinese and foreign directors of the Confucius Institute.

In the message of congratulation, Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarter, noted that the past 36 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Antigua and Barbuda, have seen mutual benefits and win-win results in various areas as well as fruitful achievements in the two countries. He expressed his wish that the two countries can make joint efforts to lay a solid foundation for Chinese language teaching, build the Confucius Institute into a bridge for communication and cooperation of education and culture between China and Antigua and Barbuda, and play an active role in enhancing the two peoples' friendship and mutual understanding.

In his speech, Rodney Williams expressed that the unveiling ceremony of the Confucius Institute in Antigua and Barbuda has witnessed the friendship and cooperation between China and Antigua and Barbuda, which will enhance friendship and mutual understanding in the two peoples. He pointed out that people of Antigua and Barbuda have been enthusiastic about learning Chinese language and Chinese culture. It is hoped that Zhejiang International Studies University can give full play to its own advantages in language and culture and sincerely cooperate with Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education to build the Confucius Institute into a Model Confucius Institute of the Caribbean regions.

Michael Brown, in his speech, shared his education experience in Qufu, the hometown of Confucius, and what he has seen and thought after being promoted as Minister of Education. He encouraged students of Antigua and Barbuda to make their contributions to people-to-people exchanges in the two countries and creating a better international image of Antigua and Barbuda. He noted that the Ministry of Education of Antigua and Barbuda will spare no efforts to support the establishment of the Confucius Institute, making learning about Chinese and China become a normal scene for people of Antigua and Barbuda to enrich knowledge and keep lifelong learning.

Sun Ang spoke highly of the positive effects of the cooperation MOU on the Belt and Road Initiative signed by Antigua and Barbuda's government. It is hoped that the Confucius Institute can play its role in enhancing people-to-people exchanges and deepening the cooperation between China and Antigua and Barbuda.

Hong Gang expressed that Zhejiang International Studies University will learn from exchanges and international promotion of Chinese language to make a medium and long term plan. By giving full play to its own academic advantages and promoting exchanges and communications, Zhejiang International Studies University will work with Antigua and Barbuda to establish an excellent, diverse and comprehensive education system.

During the ceremony, the first batch of students of the Confucius Institute in Antigua and Barbuda, about 40 students in 3 pilot classes, gave performances such as “Filial Piety in Chinese Culture”, “Young China and “Jasmine Flowers” to exemplify Chinese traditional culture, which earned endless applause.

The Confucius Institute in Antigua and Barbuda, as the first Confucius Institute in Eastern Caribbean regions, is jointly established by Zhejiang International Studies University and Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education.
