Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana Celebrates 10th Anniversary

On November 25th, local time, the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana was celebrated at the conference center of the University. Present were the University President David Norris, Vice Presidents Oatlhokwa Nkomazana; Happy Siphambe, former President Bojosi Otlhogile from the University of Botswana; Dennis A. Siginer, Vice President from Botswana International University of Science and Technology; Frank Youngman, Vice President from Botswana Open University; Sasara George, former Ambassador to China; Wang Bangfu, the charge d'affaires from the Chinese Embassy in Botswana; Jiang Mingjun, Vice President of Shanghai Normal University; Wu Cheng, Director of International Affairs Office of Shanghai Normal University and Jia Tiefei, Library Director of Shanghai Normal University, as well as the principals from local primary and secondary schools, and the representatives of overseas Chinese.

Jiang Mingjun, Vice President of Shanghai Normal University, expressed in his speech that Shanghai Normal University had its first Confucius Institute at the University of Botswana. For a decade, it has committed to the course of teaching Chinese, developing friendship and promoting the cultural exchange and the mutual understanding between two countries, and it was expected to go further for the next decade.

Wang Bangfu, the charge d'affaires of Chinese Embassy in Botswana, stated that China and Botswana were good friends, good partners and good brothers when the cultural and people-to-people exchanges played an important role in building a China-Botswana community with a shared future, and as a result of it, the Confucius Institute as a platform went into a success.

On behalf of the minister of Education of Botswana, David Norris, President of the University of Botswana, said that the Confucius Institute, as a bridge to enhance cooperation and exchanges between the two peoples, encouraged more and more people to learn Chinese. Only by learning Chinese could we better understand China and learn from China's development experience.

The evening show to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute of the University of Botswana was held in the auditorium at Westwood international School, with more than 500 guests and audience coming to enjoy.

Teacher Jin Xiaoyan and graduate students, Tan Shijun and Wang Yarong, from the School of Physical Education of Shanghai Normal University gave a powerful performance of Kungfu, together with the students of the Confucius Institute. It is worth mentioning that for this performance, Jin Xiaoyan came to Botswana one month ahead of schedule to teach Kungfu. Students Wang Han, Zhang Yuanyuan, Zhu Shuqi and Song Xuyan from the School of Music of Shanghai Normal University played Chinese zither, pipa, erhu and bamboo flute, which charmed the audience with traditional Chinese instruments. In addition, the teachers of the Confucius Institute also performed tai chi “Zen Rhythm”, dance “Fair Ladies”, sang Chinese song “Triumph”, and read the Chinese poetry “Snow-to the tune of Chin Yuan Chun”, and the following performance were given by the students from Legae English Medium School, the nursery rhyme ensemble “Three-Character Scripture”, and “Sleep in spring, unaware of dawning”, as well as “Two Tigers”, which won the over lasting applause from audience. In the end, the Mafitlhakgosi Traditional Dance gave a wonderful performance as its intense rhythm and interaction brought the night to a new high.

In the morning of June 26th, officials from the University of Botswana and Shanghai Normal University held the annual council of Confucius Institute and reached an agreement on cooperation.

The Confucius Institute of the University of Botswana officially enrolled students in July 2009 and started the course of Chinese teaching. Having developed for a decade, the Confucius Institute has set up six education centers across the country at universities, middle schools and primary schools, apart from the Headquarter at the University of Botswana where more than 8500 people so far have learned Chinese through the Confucius institute of the University of Botswana.
