Confucius Institute at Makerere University Celebrates Its 5th Anniversary

A celebration of its fifth anniversary was held by the Confucius Institute at Makerere University in the capital, Kampala, Uganda on November 23rd.

When addressing the ceremony, Busingye Mary Karooro Okurut, Minister for Office of the Prime Minister of Uganda, hoped that Ugandans learn Chinese and develop together with China by its opening-up. She also appreciated the support from Chinese government and enterprises for the development of education in Uganda.

Zheng Zhuqiang, Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, praised the Confucius Institute’s contribution to popularizing Chinese and Chinese culture in Uganda over the past five years, and expressed the hope that, by language learning and cultural exchanges, mutual understanding between two peoples can be enhanced, and the comprehensive cooperative partnership between China and Uganda can be risen to a new height, growing the flower of China - Uganda friendship better.

Barnabas Navangui, Vice President of Makerere University, announced the launch of the major of Chinese and Asian studies at the event. Makerere University, the first university in Africa to offer such degree course, would provide great opportunities for students who were about to take the major, he emphasized.

During the celebration, teachers and students from the Confucius Institute showed their performances, including scene drama , Chinese dance, and chorus of Chinese songs, bringing joy to the ceremony.

The Confucius Institute at Makerere University, co-organized by Xiangtan University, was founded in December, 2014. Since its establishment, the number of registered and non-registered students has totaled over 170,000 and 10,000 respectively. And 10 teaching sites have been opened in Uganda.
