Confucius Classroom at Riga Technical University Unveiled

On October 14th, local time, the opening ceremony of the Confucius Classroom at Riga Technical University was held. Uldis Sukovskis, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Igors Tipāns, Deputy Rector for International Academic Cooperation and Studies, Pēteris Pildegovičs, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia, Liang Jianquan, Chinese Ambassador to Latvia, and Shang Quanyu, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Latvia were present at the event. Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, the Ministry of Education of Latvia, Xinhua News Agency, China Cultural Center, the Latvian Federation of Oversea Chinese Compatriots, students of Riga Technical University, teachers and students of Latvia Wushu Association and Chinese oversea students attended the ceremony.

Liang Jianquan extended his congratulations on the establishment of the Confucius Classroom at Riga Technical University. He pointed out that with the concerted efforts of China and Latvia in recent years, the Confucius Institute is booming as a platform to promote cultural exchanges, mutual understanding and deep cooperation.

Sukovskis said the Confucius Classroom is a significant component of the university’s international cooperation, not only in language exchange, but also in cross-cultural cooperation. Cultural understanding and language exchange between Latvia and China are critical paths to promote the progress of international relations.

In their speeches, Pildegovičs and Shang Quanyu expressed their appreciations for the achievement made in Chinese teaching at Riga Technical University and hoped that the Confucius classroom in the university can be thrived and make greater stride.

Tipāns noted that it takes ten years to grow trees, but a hundred years to rear people. Riga Technical University transformed from a small Chinese corner into a Confucius Classroom. It is hoped that through this Confucius Classroom, students in Latvia can have a deep understanding on Chinese cultural and science and technology, and the cooperation between two sides can be enriched and diversified.

Then, students from the Confucius classroom sang a Chinese song called “There is no Difference Between Us” and Chinese students sang “Mana Dziesma” in Latvian. Excellent performances, such as guzheng, tea art and poetry recitation, took turns, winning loud applause from all guests. The event ended with the song “Love Each Other”.

Riga technical University is a comprehensive public university focusing on science and engineering. It started to develop its Chinese courses in September 2013. This Confucius Classroom is the fifth of its kind under the Confucius Institution at the University of Latvia.
