Education Commission Delegation of DPRK Visits Confucius Institute Headquarters

On the morning of November 6th, Kim Sung-du, Chairman of the Education Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), led a delegation to visit the Confucius Institute Headquarters and held talks with Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters. After the talks, the opening ceremony of the Chinese Language Center at Pyongyang University of Foreign Studies was held.

Chairman Kim Sung-du delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, noting that with the constant development of bilateral friendly relations, the demand for Chinese language learning of the people in the DPRK is increasing day by day. The establishment of the Chinese Language Center at Pyongyang University of Foreign Studies will surely upgrade Chinese teaching in the DPRK. The Education Commission of the DPRK will also take this opportunity to expand exchanges and cooperation in education with China. Deputy Chief Executive Ma Jianfei said that with the strong support from the education departments of the two countries, both sides will cooperate sincerely and work hand in hand to forge the Chinese Language Center into a high quality institution with characteristic and cultivate high-level Chinese language talents, so as to continually make contributions to the friendship between China and the DPRK. Li Wenxiu and Xia Wenbin, two presidents of the Chinese partner universities, said that they will closely cooperate and fully support the Chinese Language Center at Pyongyang University of Foreign Studies.

Pyongyang University of Foreign Studies is the highest comprehensive foreign language education institution and the earliest renowned university to conduct Chinese language education in the DPRK. The agreement of the Chinese Language Center was signed on September 27th, 2019, and the Center is the first Chinese language teaching institution in the DPRK co-built by the Confucius Institute Headquarters.

Before the meeting, the delegation of the Education Commission of the DPRK visited the Cultural Experience Center and the Chinese Textbook Exhibition.
