2019 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Central Asia and the South Caucasus Held in Tajikistan

On the morning of October 21th, 2019, the Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Central Asia and the South Caucasus was held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Safolzoda M.k, Senior Advisor, and Assistant to the President of the Republic of Tajikistan on Social Development and Public Relations, Murtazozoda D.S, Member of the Upper House Committee on Science, Education, Culture and Youth Policy, Naziri L, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Hojazoda T.A., first Vice President of Tajikistan Nationality University, Chen Daiwen, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in Tajikistan, Liu Jian, Deputy Director of the Education Department of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Shao Xubo, Director of Division of Asian and African Confucius Institutes of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

On behalf of the President of Tajikistan, Safolzoda expressed his gratitude to the Confucius Institute Headquarters for its support for the development of education in Tajikistan. He said that the well-developed relationship between the two countries cannot be separated from the wisdom of the leaders of the two countries. It is under the high-level cooperation between the two countries that extensive cooperation has been established in education, science and technology and other fields. The Confucius Institute has become an important force to promote exchanges among countries.

Chen Daiwen said in his speech that President Xi Jinping has stressed many times that “State-to-state relations thrive when there is friendship between the peoples”. Over the past 10 years, the Confucius Institute at Tajikistan Nationality University has taken root and thrived in Tajikistan. It is increasingly becoming a window for Tajikistanis to understand the history, culture and development of China. It has played an important role in strengthening the people-to-people bond between the two countries.

Murtazozoda said that China has given great help to the development of Tajikistan. Consolidating the relations between Tajikistan and China is the priority of Tajikistan's government. Education is the focus of the cooperation between the two countries, and the establishment of the Confucius Institute at Tajikistan Nationality University is a milestone in the education cooperation between the two countries. The Confucius Institute respected the local culture by integrating itself into the local culture in the process of development, which was welcomed by Tajikistanis.

Naziri thanked the Chinese government and the Confucius Institute Headquarters and affirmed the achievements of the two Confucius Institutes in Tajikistan. He said that China plays an important role in global education. It is hoped that more students in can be sent to study in China.

Hojazoda, Liu Jian and Shao Xubo welcomed the delegates and appreciated all parties for their long-term support. They hope that through the Joint Conference, the wisdom can be gathered, exchanges and cooperation can be deepened, and a better future can be created.

The president of Mining and Metallurgy Institute of Tajikistan, the vice president of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the vice president of Xinjiang Normal University, the vice president of Lanzhou University and representatives of enterprises from China and other countries and also attended the ceremony. More than 70 representatives from 17 Confucius Institutes in 7 countries including Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Armenia attended the meeting. After the opening ceremony, representatives held case study and group discussions on issues such as strengthening the management of the Confucius Institutes, improving the quality and efficiency of running the Confucius Institutes, and integrating Chinese into their national education system.
