Leaders of China and Brazil Jointly Witness Signing of Agreement on Establishing Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine at Federal University of Goiás

On the afternoon of October 25th, Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks at the Great Hall of the People with his Brazilian counterpart Jair Bolsonaro who was on his state visit to China. After the talks, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of several bilateral cooperation documents and announced fruits of bilateral cooperation, including the establishment of the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Brazil, which would be jointly established by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Federal University of Goiás.

On morning of October 25th, Hu Chunhua, Vice Premier of China and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced the opening of the Great Brazil–China Business Seminar, the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Federal University of Goiás signed the Agreement on Establishing Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine at Federal University of Goiás.

Founded in 1960, Federal University of Goiás is a federally funded institution of higher education directly under the Ministry of Education. Currently, it has over 32,000 students and 2,500 lecturers distributed in 8 campuses. Through cooperation with Hebei University of Chinese Medicine from China, it has offered courses in Chinese language, Chinese culture, acupuncture and moxibustion as well as courses in Traditional Chinese Medicine for postgraduate students. This Confucius Institute would be operated in cooperation with Hebei University of Chinese Medicine and Tianjin Foreign Studies University.

There are 10 Confucius Institutes and three Confucius Classrooms in Brazil, which are important platforms for Chinese language teaching and cultural exchanges between the two countries. As the first Confucius institute featuring Traditional Chinese Medicine in Brazil, the Confucius Institute for Traditional Chinese Medicine at Federal University of Goiás will help to deepen exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in education and medicine, and better meet the needs of local people in learning Chinese language, understanding China and experiencing Traditional Chinese Medicine culture.
