On October 14th, the Confucius Institute at Universiti Malaysia Pahang, established by Universiti Malaysia Pahang and Hebei University, held an opening ceremony at the Pekan Campus. Normah Osman, Secretary-General of the Policy Planning and Coordination Division of the Ministry of Education of Malaysia, Wan Azhar Wan Yusoff, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) of Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Feng Jun, Chief of the Culture Department of the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, and Shen Shigang, Vice President of Hebei University attended and delivered speeches. Representatives of the Confucius Institute at University at Malaya and the Confucius Institute of SEGi University, representatives of local Chinese-funded organizations, Chinese associations and teachers and students of Universiti Malaysia Pahang attended the ceremony.

Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, pointed out in his congratulatory letter that China and Malaysia enjoy a time-honored exchanges and profound friendship. In recent years, China-Malaysia comprehensive strategic partnership has developed healthily and steadily, and practical cooperation in various fields has continued to expand. It is hoped that Hebei University and Universiti Malaysia Pahang will give full play to their respective advantages, cooperate sincerely and work together to consolidate the foundation of Chinese language teaching, carry out various cultural activities, and build the Confucius Institute into a bridge for educational and cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries, so as to make positive contributions to promoting mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

In his speech, Wan Azhar Wan Yusoff hoped that through the platform of the Confucius Institute, the cooperation and exchange fields between Universiti Malaysia Pahang and Hebei University will be further expanded, and new achievements will be continuously made in the fields of Chinese education, personnel training and scientific research.

In his speech, Shen Shigang reviewed the achievements of exchanges and cooperation between Hebei University and Universiti Malaysia Pahang in the past ten years. He said that Hebei University will strongly support the construction and development of the Confucius Institute at Universiti Malaysia Pahang, and will provide more solid guarantees in the selection of Chinese teachers and volunteers and student exchange activities.

In his speech, Feng Jun said that the Confucius Institute has made positive contributions to the promotion of friendship between China and the peoples of other countries and to the exchanges of Chinese and foreign civilizations. It is hoped that the Confucius Institute of Universiti Malaysia Pahang will play an important role in promoting people-to-people bond as well as cultural and economic cooperation between China and Malaysia.

Normah said in his speech that Universiti Malaysia Pahang is a well-known university of science and technology, and the cultivation of humanistic quality is also a priority. The Chinese Cultural Center was established in 2011, in which a large number of talents who are proficient in Chinese have been trained for the Malaysian government and enterprises. As the third Confucius Institute in Malaysia and the first Confucius Institute on the east coast of Malaysia, the Confucius Institute at Universiti Malaysia Pahang will further meet the needs of the people in the east coast to learn Chinese, which is of great significance for deepening cultural exchanges and expanding cooperation between the two countries.

Later, teachers and students of the Hebei University Art Troupe performed Chinese folk music, calligraphy, martial arts, folk songs and folk dances, while students of Universiti Malaysia Pahang performed unique Malaysian folk songs and dances. In the warm and friendly venue, there were bursts of applause from time to time.

Arts performance

To celebrate the opening of the Confucius Institute, from October 10th to 14th, Hebei University and Universiti Malaysia Pahang jointly held the “Malaysia-China Culture and Art Festival”. Five performances were given in International Islamic University Malaysia, Gambang Campus of Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Kuantan Tanah Putih National Chinese Middle School, and the Pekan Campus of Universiti Malaysia Pahang successively. They held a cross-cultural symposium on Chinese calligraphy and Arabic calligraphy, which was warmly welcomed by Malaysian teachers and students.
