Plaque Unveiling Ceremony for Confucius Institute at University of the Gambia Held

On October 15th, local time, Isatou Touray, Vice President of Republic of the Gambia and Ma Jianchun, Chinese Ambassador to Gambia, jointly unveiled the plaque for the Confucius Institute at the University of the Gambia. More than 200 people attended the plaque unveiling ceremony, including Badara Joof, Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology of Gambia, Professor Dr. Faqir Muhammad Anjum, Vice Chancellor of the University of the Gambia, Tang Wenben, Vice Chairman of the Council of Guizhou University. The ceremony was also attended by delegation from Guizhou University, Chinese medical teams in Gambia, representatives of Chinese-funded enterprises, representatives of Chinese people in Gambia and teachers and students of the University of the Gambia.

In her speech, Isatou Touray introduced Gambian government's efforts on education development and reviewed the achievements made in cooperation between the two countries in various fields in recent years. At the same time, she extended warm welcome to the delegation from Guizhou University, adding that the Confucius Institute jointly built by Guizhou university and the University of the Gambia is of great significance and it will become an important window through which Gambian people can learn Chinese, understand Chinese culture and exchanges and cooperation between the two countries can be promoted.

Ma Jianchun expressed congratulations on the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the ceremony. He said that since the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries, progress have been made in cultural and people-to-people exchanges. As a milestone for the ties between China and Gambia, the establishment of this Confucius Institute would bring the two countries closer. He hoped that the Confucius Institute at the University of the Gambia could serve as a bridge to deepen the friendship between the two peoples and contribute to the establishment of a community of shared future between China and Gambia.


Ma Jianchun delivered a speech

Tang Wenben said in his speech that the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of the Gambia is an important part of the implementation of the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries and fruit of the Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Guizhou University would give full support to the Confucius Institute at the University of the Gambia, and work to build it into a Confucius Institute with high quality and characteristics.


Tang Wenben delivered a speech

Faqir Muhammad Anjum noted that the Confucius Institute would not only promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, but also help to deepen communication and cooperation between the two peoples in fields like medical care, education and agriculture. He would like to promote cooperation between the University of the Gambia and Guizhou University in teaching, research and teacher-student exchange through the platform of the Confucius Institute.

After the ceremony, Fan Zhaokang, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of the Gambia showed guests around office area and teaching area.
