Confucius Institute at the University of Florence Holds 5th Anniversary Celebration and 7th Chinese Language Skills Competition for Chinese Language Teachers in Italy and San Marino

On October 17th, local time, the 5th Anniversary Celebration of the Confucius Institute at the University of Florence, Italy, was held at the Piazza Ognissanti. Cristina Giachi, Deputy Mayor of Florence, Giorgia Giovannetti, Vice President of the University of Florence and Italian Director-General of the Confucius Institute, Valentina Pedone, Italian Director of the Confucius Institute, Wang Wengang, Chinese Consul-General in Florence, Yu Xingguo, Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Italy, Lei Xinghui, Vice President of Tongji University and Chinese Chair of the Board of Directors of the Confucius Institute, He Jihong, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute attended the event. Dario Nardella, Mayor of Florence, and Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, sent congratulatory letters, and Luigi Dei, President of the University of Florence, expressed his congratulation through video message.

Ma Jianfei said in his congratulatory letter that the Confucius Institute Headquarters will support the development of the Confucius Institute at the University of Florence as always, and it is believed that with the joint efforts from both sides, the Confucius Institute will continue to cultivate outstanding talents who are proficient in Chinese as well as Chinese culture and make greater contributions to the friendly exchanges between China and Italy.

Five years ago, the Confucius Institute at the University of Florence sowed the seed of China-Italy cultural exchanges. Now this seed is deeply rooted in Florence and thrives in the sun of Tuscany. Yu Xingguo wished the Confucius Institute to strive for excellence, and proactively build the platform for Chinese language teaching, for Chinese culture spread, and for China-Italy friendship to cultivate more and more “Marco Polo” in new era as by virtue of the framework of the the Belt and Road Initiative under the joint efforts from China and Italy.

Giorgia Giovannetti introduced the cooperation between the University of Florence and Tongji University and wished a complete success for the 5th anniversary celebration.

Lei Xinghui affirmed the fruitful results achieved by the cooperation and exchanges of the University of Florence and Tongji University and hoped that the Confucius Institute will stride to a more brilliant future by virtue of experience, wisdom and achievements over the past five years to play an active role in promoting China-Italy friendship and enhancing mutual understanding.

Nicola Piccoli, a famous Italian calligrapher, wrote three Chinese characters of “Fei”, “Leng”, and “Cui” (Firenze in Chinese) to the guests on site in five Chinese calligraphy styles, seal, clerical, regular, running and cursive scripts respectively.

Jacopo Maria Lasala, the winner of the 14th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students in Italy and the first-prize winner of the world “Chinese Bridge”, shared his experience of learning Chinese and participating in the 2019 “Italian Young Leaders Advanced Translation Seminar”.

At the celebration, the orchestra from the University of Florence performed string quartet; Li Jian, a disciple of Peking Opera master—Mei Baojiu, showed the classic opera “The Drunken Beauty” in cooperation with students from Tongji University in a natural and vivid way, winning bursts of applause from audience; Wang Jing, a teacher of Tongji University, performed Kung Fu Fan to show the elegance and connotation of Chinese Kung Fu; Ni Shiyun, a famous guqin master, played the masterpieces of “Mantra of Buddha” and “Wild Geese Descending on the Sandbank”, sometimes in a low and mildvoice, and sometimes in a hasty and vigorous way; the teacher Ni Yumeng played the guqin “On Returning Home” while singing, bringing the audience to a peaceful and open-minded world. Finally, the celebration ended in the traditional Italian flag-waving performance.

On October 16th, the first Confucius Classroom of the Confucius Institute at the University of Florence was inaugurated at the Convitto Nazionale “Vittorio Emanuele II” in Arezzo. Wang Wengang and Yu Xingguo attended the inauguration ceremony.

As an important event of the 5th anniversary celebration, from October 17th to 18th, the “7th Chinese Language Skills Competition for Chinese Language Teachers in Italy and San Marino”, sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in Italy, organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of Florence and, co-organized by the Radio Confucius Classroom CRI-Uni-Italy, was held at the Piazza Ognissanti.

Since its official operation in 2014, the Confucius Institute at the University of Florence has opened one Confucius Classroom and 8 teaching sites, serving 500 registered students, and hosting over 100 cultural activities in 2019.
