Launching Ceremony of 12th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students Held in Zhengzhou

On the morning of October 22nd, sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and the Henan Provincial People’s Government, and organized by the Education Department of Henan Province, the People’s Government of Zhengzhou Municipality, and the Henan Radio & Television Station, the Welcome Ceremony & Launching Ceremony of the 12th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students on “Learning Chinese, Creating Brighter Future” was held at Zhengzhou No. 47 Middle & High School.

Yin Hongbin, Deputy Secretary General of the Henan Provincial People’s Government, announced the launching of the Competition. Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Zheng Bangshan, Director of the Education Department of Henan Province, and Wang Xinwei, Mayor of the People’s Government of Zhengzhou Municipality attended the ceremony and delivered speeches.

264 teachers and students from 119 divisions in 105 countries from all over the world join the Competition in China. Among them, it is the first time for the contestants from Cape Verde, Albania and Equatorial Guinea to compete in China. It is the first time for Henan to hold “Chinese Bridge” Competition, and there will be a grand Chinese language culture show in Henan. In the cultural exchanges among countries, the Competition will tell China’s stories well and spread China’s image in the new era.

On behalf of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, welcomed the contestants and head teachers to join the Competition in China. In his speech, he said that the original purpose of the “Chinese Bridge” Competition was to build a cross-cultural communication platform for mutual understanding and mutual learning among young people around the world. The theme of this year’s “Chinese Bridge” is “Learning Chinese, Creating Brighter Future”. Young fellows from five continents will make friends and know the world through the “bridge” of Chinese language.

The president and student representatives of Zhengzhou No. 47 Middle & High School and head teachers and students of the “Chinese Bridge” Competition exchange gifts and ideas with each other. In the end, the guests and the contestant representatives jointly opened the long scroll of the 12th Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students, marking the official launch of the Competition.

The “Chinese Bridge” series of Chinese language competition includes the Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, the Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students and the Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreigners Across the Globe. Since its inception in 2002, the “Chinese Bridge” has attracted more than 1.4 million young people from over 150 countries. It is known as the “Olympic” of Chinese language and the bridge of culture, friendship and heart connecting the world. The “Chinese Bridge” has become an important brand in international exchanges in language and culture.
