On the evening of October 18th, local time, the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera at Binghamton University was held at the Anderson Art Center. The school’s professor, 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner, Stanley Whittingham, was present to extend congratulations.

On the evening, students presented a wonderful program for the celebration. The Peking Opera “Ten Years of Cultivating People”, which best reflected the ten-year teaching achievements of the Institute, was performed by American students Bai Ke, Jiang Liandeng and Mu Chenpeng. They knew nothing about Peking Opera before, but now they are not only fluent in Chinese, but also become experts in Beijing opera performances.

“Song of Silk” was performed by the performers from Binghamton University and China Academy of Opera. It used ancient Chinese poetry as lyrics, Peking Opera as melody and Bel Canto singing, as well as Chinese and Western instruments. It was a genuine original work combined with Chinese and Western elements.

In his speech, Whittingham said that he had visited China many times and was impressed by China’s respect for science and scientists. He urged students to “learn different cultures and languages and become a part of the world family”.

“The seed of cooperation we planted ten years ago has grown into luxuriant trees,” said Donald G. Nieman, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost of Binghamton University and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera at Binghamton University. Dr. Harvey G. Stenger, President of Binghamton University, praised that “Teaching Chinese language and culture in combination with Chinese Opera is a novel and effective way.”

On October 16th, 2009, Binghamton University and China Academy of Opera jointly established the Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera at Binghamton University. While teaching Chinese and Chinese culture, the Institute emphasized the characteristics of teaching Chinese Opera and music. Apart from offering Chinese courses, the Confucius Institute also holds lectures, seminars and other activities.
