2019 In-Service Training Workshop for Confucius Institute Directors Kicks Off in Xiamen

October 17th saw the unveiling of 2019 In-Service Training Workshop for Confucius Institute Directors in Xiamen. Sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and organized by Xiamen University, this workshop was attended by 47 foreign directors of the Confucius Institutes from 30 countries around the world. Yu Yunfeng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Yang Bin, Vice President of Xiamen university attended the opening ceremony and addressed the attendees. Charles Okechukwu Esimone, President of Nnamdi Azikewe University and Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at the University, delivered a speech on behalf of foreign directors.

Yang Bin extended warm welcome to foreign guests from various countries on behalf of Xiamen University. He gave an introduction about the Confucius Institute at Xiamen University as well as its experience and achievements in teaching Chinese overseas, noting that Xiamen University will continually attach great importance and give support to the Confucius Institute for its endeavor to promote Chinese language on the international stage. He also wished the seminar a complete success in his speech.

While sharing with the directors his own experience in hosting the Confucius Institute, Charles Esimone acknowledged the important role the Confucius Institute plays in promoting exchange among universities around the world. It is expected to learn from each other and exchange experience with directors of other Institutes to further improve the level and quality of the Confucius Institute.

Yu Yunfeng expressed his expectations on the workshop. The Confucius Institute Headquarters, he said, has always attached great importance to the cultivation of directors and he hoped directors could take this opportunity to exchange ideas with each other to strengthen their understandings on the following issues: “How to be a good Confucius Institute director?” “How to set up a development orientation based on the situation of the Confucius Institute?” “How to create a better development environment for the Confucius Institute and make it a good brand?” and “How can the Confucius Institute better promotes understanding between Chinese and foreign people and friendly relations among countries?”

After the opening ceremony, Yu Yunfeng gave a special lecture themed on “Reform and Development of the Confucius Institute in the New Era”. He introduced to the directors the history, purposes, school-running models, social responsibilities and development experience of the Confucius Institute. He said that in the new historical period, the Confucius Institute should take the initiative to meet social needs and set up its own orientation while giving full play to its own strengths and characteristics to improve efficiency and quality of school-running. The Confucius Institute should achieve sustainable, high-quality and sound development, work to transfer from meeting the needs of basic language learning to meeting the needs of high-quality and personalized Chinese learning so as to serve better as a platform for cultural exchanges with language learning as its foundation and play a greater role in promoting friendly ties between China and other countries.

In the 9-day workshop, distinguished experts and scholars would be invited to give special lectures on topics like Chinese language teaching, traditional Chinese culture, Chinese social and economic development, cultural exchanges between China and other countries. Digital Chinese teaching demonstration and field training in Chinese culture project would be organized, and discussions and seminars would be held on the orientation, distinctive development, and connotation construction of the Confucius Institute and how to improve quality and efficiency of the school running.
