On October 20th, local time, Dan Liu, Lingna Shang, Chinese teachers, and Jijun Yang, Chinese Director of the Confucius Classroom, attended the Opening Celebration of Compassion Week of Ballarat by Lake Wendouree.

A smoking ceremony, a traditional custom among Aboriginal people in Australia, was hosted by a local aboriginal Australian, marking the opening celebration of the Compassion Week. Ben Kelly, Chair of Ballarat Compassion, gave a talk about the global Charter for Compassion and the events of the week including Walk for Mental Health, Art and Empathy Tours, InterFaith Friendship Walk, Compassion Story Slam, Words and you Heart Children’s Bookclub, Compassion Meditation, Giving & Receiving Free Haircuts, A Compassionate Approach to Teenage Turmoil, Share a Movie with Someone in Need, Help Green the World etc.

Then Ben Kelly invited ten representatives from various cultures to read key sentences from the global Charter for Compassion. Jijun Yang was invited to read the statement in Chinese.
