Confucius Institute at the University of Toledo Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

On September 27th, local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of Toledo celebrates its 10th anniversary on the occasion of the 2570th anniversary of Confucius’s birth. William Ayres, Vice Provost of the University of Toledo, Sammy Spann, Vice President for Student Affairs, Daniel Johnson, former president of the University of Toledo, Zhao Dingxuan, President of Yanshan University, and over 150 people attended the ceremony, including representatives of Toledo city government, members of the Confucius Institute Council, representatives of Chinese communities, and representatives of other Confucius Institutes.

William Ayres welcomed and thanked Zhao Dingxuan and his delegation in his speech. He said that the Confucius Institute not only promotes the development of local Chinese language and cultural programs, but also provides a platform for the two universities to communicate with the two peoples. He expressed his gratitude to Yanshan University for its support to the Confucius Institute by sending excellent teachers and warmly receiving the delegation from the University of Toledo. 2019 is the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute and also marks 34 years of cooperation and friendship between the University of Toledo and Yanshan University. It is expected that the cooperation between the two universities to reach a new height.

Zhao Dingxuan said that in the past ten years, under the promotion of the Confucius Institute, the relevant departments of the two universities have signed student exchange agreements and put them into practice, set up special scholarships for overseas students, and exchanged visiting scholars or hiring professors from each other. At least three delegations from the University of Toledo will visit Yanshan University every year. The Confucius Institute has become a bridge and link between the two universities to carry out practical exchanges and cooperation. He looked forward to making the Confucius Institute of the University of Toledo better with enthusiasm and perseverance, and making great contributions to deepening the cooperation between the two universities, promoting the cultural exchange between China and the United States, and advancing prosperity and progress of human society.

Daniel Johnson, Sammy Spann and Savannah Brewer, a member of the 2017 “Chinese Bridge” summer camp delivered speeches respectively. They shared their own stories with China and experiences in the Confucius Institute, and expressed their best wishes to the Confucius Institute.

The governor's office of Ohio and Toledo city government awarded a certificate to the Confucius Institute at the University of Toledo for its contributions to the University and the whole Toledo region over the past decade.

William Ayres and Zhao Dingxuan inaugurated for the “International Education and Communication Practice Base”. As the latest program for the 10th anniversary in the Confucius Institute, the Confucius Constitute will cooperate with the College of Humanities and Law in Yanshan University, and the Confucius Institute will become the overseas practice base for the Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages of Yanshan University.

At the ceremony, Zhang Zhuyan, Vice President of the College of Art & Design of Yanshan University, led the art troupe to present a magnificent dance feast. The group dances “Gobi Sand Dunes” and “Family” integrate the dance elements of Mongolian dance and Northeast Yangko (a popular rural folk dance), showing the life of people who is living in grasslands. The solo dance “Ink Painting Solitary Crane” combines the traditional images of Chinese ink painting and the crane and vividly presents the image of the crane. “Wear Flowers” presents a vivid image of a young girl on the stage, expressing the joy when the young girl wears flowers. The 12 dance programs show the Chinese culture and the beauty of Chinese dance in the form of solo dance, double dance and group dance, combined with Chinese national dance and Chinese traditional cultural elements.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Toledo was established in 2009 in collaboration with Yanshan University. Over the past ten years, the Confucius Institute at the University of Toledo has actively carried out various activities such as Chinese language teaching and cultural exchanges, which has influenced the whole Toledo region, and has promoted high-level exchanges visits between the two universities to deepen mutual understanding and cooperation. The Confucius Institute at the University of Toledo has 12 teaching staff currently. It has offered Chinese credit courses in 14 public primary and secondary schools and 1 high school in Toledo City. It has also signed cooperation agreements with the headquarters of the University of Toledo, Columbus Community University, North Central State College and Jackson Community University in Michigan to offer credit and non-credit Chinese courses, and has carried out promotion and organization of various cultural activities. At present, the Confucius Institute has over 6,000 students of all kinds.
