5th São Paulo Chinese Film Exhibition Opens in Brazil

On October 3rd, local time, the 5th São Paulo Chinese Film Exhibition (5ª Mostra de Cinema Chinês de São Paulo) opened in São Paulo Cultural Center in Brazil. The film exhibition was organized by the Confucius Institute at São Paulo State University, São Paulo City Hall, São Paulo Cultural Bureau and São Paulo Cultural Center. Celio Franceschet, Representative of São Paulo Cultural Center, Chen Peijie, Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in São Paulo, Liu Miaomiao, a famous Chinese director, and representatives of the local Chinese associations and Chinese-funded enterprises as well as friends from all walks of life in Brazil attended the opening ceremony.

In her speech, Chen Peijie expressed her congratulations on the success of the Exhibition. She said that this year has seen various celebrations as it marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-Brazil diplomatic relations. The São Paulo Chinese Film Exhibition, as one of the highlights of varied cultural events, plays a significant role in the China-Brazil cultural exchanges.

Luis Antonio Paulino, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at São Paulo State University, said in his speech that film as a special art form can transcend borders, enhance interpersonal understanding, resonate with many people and promote cultural exchanges and cooperation. The São Paulo Chinese Film Exhibition opens a gateway to China and shows the Brazilian people a real, dynamic China. The Confucius Institute at São Paulo State University has endeavored to teach Chinese language and promote Chinese culture in Brazil in the hope that the efforts can improve the exchanges between the two peoples and consolidate partnership between the two countries.

Liu Miaomiao expressed that the film exhibition centers on the concept “Group Portraits of Contemporary Chinese Female Directors” with all selected films directed by Chinese female filmmakers. She noted that, Peng Xiaolian, the director of the opening film Please Remember Me, was about to attend the festival but unfortunately passed away before the exhibition. The selection of Peng Xiaolin’s work as the opening film is a tribute to her.

On that day, after watching Please Remember Me, the Brazilian audience show their affection for the film. They said that they have learned the rich and inclusive Chinese culture from the film and look forward to other works to be screened.

Nine Films will be screened from October 3rd to 13th, falling into three units - “Please Remember Me – Special Presentation in Memory of Director Peng Xiaolian”, “Half the Sky of the Fifth Generation”, “The New Generation of Chinese Female Directors”. Those films are Please Remember Me, A City Called Macau, Red Flowers and Green Leaves, The Police Diary, The Crossing, A First Farewell, Three Adventures of Brooke, Girls Always Happy and Enter the Forbidden City.

As a cultural marker of the Confucius Institute at São Paulo State University, the São Paulo Chinese Film Exhibition has gained popularity in Brazil. “I hope that the São Paulo Chinese Film Exhibition will continue to be held in the future, strive to bring more excellent Chinese films to Brazilian people, help them understand the diverse Chinese culture and become the cultural bridge for China-Brazil exchanges”, said Luo Jin, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at São Paulo State University.
