Premier of China and Prime Minister of Pakistan Witness Signing Ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding to Establish the Confucius Institute at the University of Sargodha

On October 8th, Li Keqiang, Premier of China holds talks with Imran Khan, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, at the Great Hall of the People. Prime Minister Imran Khan came to China for attending the closing ceremony of International Horticultural Exhibition 2019, Beijing, and working visits.

After the talks, Li Keqiang and Imran Khan witnessed the signing of several bilateral cooperation agreements on infrastructure construction, the security of law enforcement, culture, education and media. Among these agreements, a Memorandum of Understanding to Establish the Confucius Institute at the University of Sargodha was signed by Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Naghmana Hashmi, Pakistan’s Ambassador to China.

The University of Sargodha is a well-known institution for higher education in Pakistan. Founded in 1929, it has more than 24,000 students and nearly 800 faculty and staff. In recent years, with the in-depth development of China-Pakistan economic and trade cooperation, the Pakistani people, especially the young people, are very enthusiastic about learning Chinese and their demand for that is constantly rising. In order to meet this demand, the University of Sargodha applied to the Confucius Institute Headquarters for building a Confucius institute and the application was approved.

There are now four Confucius Institutes in Pakistan which are important platforms for Chinese language teaching and cultural exchanges between the two countries. The establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Sargodha will further arouse the enthusiasm of the local people to learn Chinese and cultivate more envoys of cultural exchanges and friendship for the two peoples.
