Symposium on Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China Held in Thailand

On September 16th, The Chinese Embassy Thailand and Thai Military Officer Academy co-organized the symposium on celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand and Chinese Ambassador to Thailand Lv Jian attended the symposium and delivered keynote speeches. Wei Wen, Former Thai Ambassador to China, and Gen. Surasit Thanadtang, Director of Thai-Chinese Strategic Research Center, as well as academic, educational and business experts participated in the discussion. More than 300 people from the political, military and academic circles were present at the event. Pacharee Suankaew, Waranee Vessoontorntep and Pornchanit Kaew-nate, the vice-presidents of Suan Dusit University at Suphanburi, Tanaporn Khotphat, Foreign Director of Confucius Institute of Suan Dusit University at Suphanburi, Wang Huichang from Representative Office of Confucius Institute Headquarters in Thailand and Huang He, Chinese Director of Confucius Institute of Suan Dusit University at Suphanburi attended the event upon invitation.

Lv Jian elaborated on China’s tremendous improvement in economy and people’s livelihood, infrastructure construction, high-tech innovation, poverty alleviation and other fields by focusing on the 70-year development of China. He pointed out that, within only two generations, China has realized its “triple jump”: it has stood up, grown rich and is becoming strong, which has created a miracle in the development history of mankind.

Lv Jian spoke highly of China-Thailand relations, saying that China-Thailand relations have historical background, foundation, advantages and future potential. The Thai royal family attaches great important to China-Thailand relations, and bilateral strategic mutual trust is increasingly improving. The two countries enjoy great potential in jointly building the Belt and Road Initiate. China-Thailand cooperation enjoys vast cooperation fields and the two sides cooperate closely in international affairs. The Chinese side has confidence, determination and ability to further promote China-Thailand relations and continue to play a leading role in the development of China-ASEAN relations, so as to write a new and bright chapter for building a community of shared future for mankind.

Princess Sirindhorn delivered a keynote speech named Chinese History in the Princess’ Literature Translation, introducing her translated Chinese literature in a chronological manner and pointing out the features and tremendous development and changes of Chinese society in different periods reflected in the translation. In the discussion, the princess praised China’s forward-looking development strategy and remarkable development achievements. She believed that under the guidance of the new development concept, China will be able to achieve the “three-step” strategic goal, thus making new contributions to the development and prosperity of the entire world while achieving its own prosperity. The princess also mentioned with great affection the scene where she welcomed President Xi Jinping (then vice-president) during his visit in Thailand and introduced her efforts in building primary schools in Sichuan and promoting student exchanges between the two countries. She also expressed her hope and suggestions on strengthening cooperation in such fields as poverty alleviation, education, religion, scientific research and youth exchanges between Thailand and China.

The experts and scholars held in-depth discussions on three topics: development achievements during the 70 years since the founding of China, the cultural exchanges between China and Thailand, and the strategic cooperation between the two countries. They praised China’s development achievements from different perspectives, talked about the history and future of China-Thailand relations, and agreed that China and Thailand have established a strong bond of common interests in a profoundly changing international landscape since the two countries have a long history of exchange and concrete cultural foundation. Our world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, and the development of China-Thailand relations has advantages of good timing, geographical convenience and harmonious human relations. Therefore, all-round cooperation should be further promoted and Thailand should have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and history so as to pass on the friendship between China and Thailand from generation to generation.

Wen Ting said in a speech entitled “The Influence of Confucius Institutes on the Thai People” that the Confucius Institute should continue to offer professional Chinese courses, cultivate high-quality graduates, improve cooperation mechanisms and build appropriate research systems. She talked about her previous stories with the Confucius Institute and pointed out that the opening of the Confucius Institute has a profound impact on both society and individuals, and is of great significance to the development of cooperation between China and Thailand. The Confucius Institute is expected to further its construction and development, seek cooperation in various fields, and serve the people of Thailand and China.

After the meeting, Huang He said that the symposium was a good opportunity for the Confucius Institute of Suan Dusit University at Suphanburi to discuss its development with experts and scholars. Princess Sirindhorn and Lv Jian gave guidance to the Confucius Institute and proposed suggestions. The Confucius Institute of Suan Dusit University at Suphanburi is expected to take this opportunity to carry out diversified development, and achieve the goal of mutual understanding and friendly exchanges between China and Thailand through two-way cultural exchanges and results sharing.
