On behalf of Chinese Embassy in Colombia, Cultural Counselor Zhu Xiaoyan expressed congratulation on the establishment of the Confucius Classroom at the University of North, Barranquilla. She said that Barranquilla is the largest port in Caribbean sea coast in North Colombia and the fourth largest tourist city in Colombia, which houses a large number of Chinese people and boasts tremendous cultural heritages. She hoped that the Confucius Classroom at the University of North, together with other three Confucius Institutes and four Confucius Classrooms, provides better learning conditions for Chinese language learners in Colombia and opens another window for local people to learn about China.

In his speech, Adolfo Meisel, Rector of the University of North noted that Barranquilla, as a port and tourist city, enjoys well-developed transportation and busy shipping business. It serves as a transit station for a mass of imported and exported goods and connects the world through scheduled flights. Many commodities in Colombia, such as coffee, fresh flowers, banana, petroleum and textile products, are ceaselessly shipped to China. In return, China’s mechanical and electrical products, transportation devices and chemical products are exported to all over Colombia. As the world’s second largest economy and a major source of outbound tourists, China plays an important leading role in world economy. It has become an urgent need for local people to learn Chinese language.

Pablo Echavarria, former Colombian Ambassador to China and Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at Medellin, said that the Confucius Institute at Medellin was unveiled on April 30th, 2010. For the past decade, the Confucius Institute at Medellin has developed into a flagship of people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Colombia in such fields as Chinese language teaching, cultural promotion, faculty training, HSK and social public welfare. The establishment of the Confucius Classroom at the University of North will surely further advance Chinese language teaching and promote Chinese cultural publicity in Colombia.

On that day, the guests also attended opening ceremony of Chinese Culture Week and Chinese Film Week and lecture on history of overseas Chinese immigrants in Barranquilla.
