The “Chinese Kitchen” Food and Culture Festival was held by the Confucius Institute at Khon Kaen University in Thailand on August 30th. The cooking smells of freshly-made Chinese cuisine attracted many local people in Khon Kaen to experience the profound and colorful Chinese culinary culture.

Liao Junyun, Consul-General of the Chinese Consulate General in Khon Kaen, explained in his speech that the culinary culture is an essential component of Chinese culture. With Chinese cuisine as the medium, more and more foreign friends start to appreciate Chinese culture from their taste buds. He hoped that people could have a better understanding of traditional Chinese culture while tasting delicious food.

Santi Laoboonsangiem, Vice Governor of Khon Kaen, said that the “Chinese Kitchen” Food and Culture Festival was a great pleasure to students and other citizens in Khon Kaen, in which people could learn more about traditional Chinese culture. He believed that all festival-goers could take away wonderful memories with them.

Some cooking demonstrations that day were performed on the outdoor square, while others were held indoors. Chefs from China and students from Khon Kaen University and its high school prepared authentic Chinese food on the spot, such as Sichuan Bourbon Chicken, Spicy Hot Pot, Fish Filets in Hot Chili Oil, and Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs. People who were eager for a taste formed a long queue. The festival was buzzing with joy and excitement.

Officials including the governor and the mayor of Khon Kaen came to participate in the event and tasted some Chinese delicious food.

Apart from Chinese food stalls, the festival also featured the cultural experience zone, the food and culture exhibition, and a variety of activities including culture lectures and gourmet salons, aiming to enhance people’s understanding of Chinese culture with food as a medium. In the multi-level food experience of all aspects, festival-goers could enjoy the great charm of Chinese culture.

The “Chinese Kitchen” is a brand event that the Confucius Institute pays high attention to on the basis of quality Chinese language teaching and other cultural activities, according to Hu Lin, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Khon Kaen University. First held in 2017, this event has stridden the third this year. It has become a unique cultural postcard of the Confucius Institute.

On the day of the “Chinese Kitchen” Food and Culture Festival, the Chinese Southeast University Alumni Association of north Thailand announced its official establishment.
