2019 Joint Meeting of Confucius Institutes in Latin America Held in Argentina

On August 22nd, local time, the 2019 Joint Meeting of Confucius Institutes in Latin America, sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Buenos Aires, was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A total of more than 100 representatives from 36 Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) in14 Latin American countries, Center of Latin American Studies, Chinese and foreign universities and colleges, Chinese embassy in Argentina and the Confucius Institute Headquarters attended the meeting. Alberto Edgardo Barbieri, Rector of the University of Buenos Aires, Zou Xiaoli, Chinese Ambassador to Argentina, Jing Wei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Zheng Weitao, Vice President of Jilin University, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

Alberto Edgardo Barbieri, Rector of the University of Buenos Aires, said in his speech that as the promoter and founder of the Confucius Institute at the university, he had the privilege of experiencing the great development of the Confucius Institute over the past decade. He said that the Confucius Institute has not only provided the Argentine people with a platform to understand contemporary China, but also made outstanding contributions to deepening the cooperation between the Chinese and Argentine peoples in the fields of culture, education, and scientific research. In order to further promote exchanges and cooperation between the Chinese side and the Argentine side in various fields, the University of Buenos Aires will provide more opportunities for Chinese and Argentine master and doctoral students to study in each other’s universities.

Zheng Weitao, Vice President of Jilin University, mentioned in his speech that in the past decade, Jilin University has carried out fruitful cooperation with the University of Buenos Aires in such areas as the localized teaching of Chinese, the promotion of culture with Chinese characteristics, and the exchange of cultural education between China and Argentina. In the future, Jilin University will continue to provide quality educational resources for the development of Confucius Institutes and deepen practical cooperation between the two sides.

Zou Xiaoli, Chinese Ambassador to Argentina, pointed out in his speech that with the increasingly close relations between China and Latin America, the role of Confucius Institutes as a two-way cultural exchange platform is becoming more and more obvious. Confucius Institutes in various countries should conform to the needs and the trend, coordinate the resources of all parties, and enrich the forms and contents of cooperation, so as to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results.

Jing Wei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, delivered a keynote speech. First of all, on behalf of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, she expressed her heartfelt congratulations on the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Buenos Aires and on its fruitful achievements. She also expressed her sincere gratitude to all sectors of the community for their contributions to the development of the Confucius Institute. She pointed out that with the sincere cooperation and joint efforts of both the Chinese side and the foreign side, the service capacity of the Confucius Institutes in Latin America has been continuously enhanced, and the recognition from universities and the public has been significantly improved. While making many gratifying achievements, the Confucius Institutes is also faced with challenges such as lack of talents and innovation ability, insufficient combination with local needs and so on. She stressed that in the future, Confucius Institutes should continue to serve the development of the host universities, the host country’s language policies and local social needs. In particular, efforts should be doubled in the aspects of openness, efficiency, localization, specialization and diversification of Confucius Institutes. The Confucius Institute Headquarters will continue to fully support the development of the Confucius Institutes in Latin America, carefully listen to the delegates attending the meeting, and work together with Confucius Institutes to meet challenges and seek common development.

The participants, focusing on the development of “Chinese + vocational skills”, helped to promote the development of local society, build a two-way and multiple communication platform for Confucius Institutes, broaden the sources of funds for Confucius Institutes and enhance the efficiency of fund use. The participants also carried out in-depth discussion about local teacher cultivation, training and other issues to further improve the quality and efficiency.
