—Shi Yu, Egyptian Contestant Wins Championship

On August 22nd, the final and closing ceremony of 18th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students was held in Changsha. The five continental champions who participated in the final were Jiang Tiangai from Myanmar, Shi Yu from Egypt, An Zishi from Moldova, Luo Mingyan from the United States and the Xiao Ma from Australia. They are particularly selected from 157 contestants in 144 competition divisions of 122 countries through the global overseas preliminaries, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, and the finals. After three sessions of intense competition in the final, including the video questions for “Da Mi’s Friend Circle”, the performance test of “Li Bai’s Friend Circle” and the “Peak Duel Competition”, the Egyptian contestant Shi Yu stood out and won the champion of 18th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students and the title of “Chinese Ambassador” and “Star of Chinese Language”.

Du Jiahao, Secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Director of the Standing Committee of Hunan Provincial People’s Congress, Xu Dazhe, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Governor of Hunan Province, Li Weiwei, Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Liu Limin, Board Member of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Chairman of the Chinese Association of International Understanding (CAFIU), Wu Lan, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Hu Henghua, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and Secretary of the CPC Changsha Municipal Party Committee of Hunan Province, Zhang Jianfei, Member and Secretary-General of the Standing Committee of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee, Wang Kemin, Deputy Director-General of the Standing Committee of Hunan Provincial People’s Congress, He Baoxiang, Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Hunan Province, Dai Daojin, Vice Chairman of the Hunan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and more than 600 Chinese and foreign college students in Hunan attended the event.

The final was hosted by Wang Han and Jin Mengjia, and Hai Xia, a newscaster from China Media Group, Professor Zhao Dongmei from Peking University, and Yi Fucheng, Director of the Confucius Institute at the Russian State University for the Humanities, were served as judges.

The first round of video questions was provided by Da Mi, a senior student of the 10th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students from the United Kingdom, with three questions for each of the five continental champions to examine the Chinese and cultural knowledge of the contestants. In the second round of the performance test, the five continental champions played different roles, telling the stories of Li Bai and his friends of various ethnic groups holding poem contest in Chang'an at the Mid-Autumn Festival and his sixth trip to Japan with Jianzhen and Chao Heng (Abeno Nakamaro), reinterpreting the exchange of Chinese and foreign cultures in the history.

After two rounds, Jiang Tiangai and Shi Yu successfully entered the final round - the Peak Duel Competition. After 90 seconds of questioning, Shi Yu won the championship with the advantage of one question in the end.

There are also Chinese and foreign artists at the ceremony, including the Super-Vocal Team from China, the “Silk Road” Ensemble made up of national instrumentalists from all over the world, the Munich Children's Choir from Germany, the Ukrainian singer Arina Domski, the Latvian artist Anze and the American singer Tang Bohu (Annie), who both have learned to perform Peking Opera, interspersed with performances such as “Beat the Hand-drums and Sing”, “The Oriental Rhapsody", “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and other cultural programs, presenting a feast of world culture combined together.

The young Cambodian boy Thuch Salik, who can speak 15 languages and is an online celebrity in China, also came to the ceremony. To sell more souvenirs, he taught himself 15 languages and therefore goes viral in China. Now he has come to China to study Chinese. Salik said: “I will always be with China in the future.”

There are also 123 “Chinese Bridge” campers from 102 countries appearing on the stage of the final. Among them, 115 are outstanding contestants in 150 preliminary rounds of 122 countries around the world, and 8 are previous winners invited to return to the final of “Chinese Bridge”.

During the competition, the top 15 contestants visited the Confucius Research Institute in Qufu, Shandong, CRRC Tangshan Co., Ltd., Shanghai SIASUN Co., Ltd. and other places to experience the traditional Chinese culture and modern science and technology achievements. Besides, the organizing committee also specially invited middle school students from the undeveloped mountainous areas of Shangyou County, Jiangxi Province to come to Changsha, Hunan to watch the competition, and interact with the five continental contestants of “Chinese Bridge”.

On the stage of the 18th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, a group of young students from all over the world gathered together to show the beauties of different cultures together with youthful passion, beautiful smile and deep friendship, which perfectly interpreted the competition theme of “One world, one family”.
