16th “Chinese Bridge-Diamond Crown Jewel” International Chinese Language Contest Held at Dhurakij Pundit University in Thailand

On August 18th, the 16th “Chinese Bridge-Diamond Crown Jewel” International Chinese Language Contest, jointly hosted by the Romchatra Foundation of Thailand, Dhurakij Pundit University, the Maritime Silk Road Confucius Institute, and the Confucius Classroom at Traimit Wittayalai High School, was held at Dhurakij Pundit University. 4276 contestants from 284 primary and secondary schools and 23 universities in over 10 Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia participated in the competition.

Guests attending the opening ceremony and awards ceremony included Phraprommangkalachan, Chairman of the Maritime Silk Road Confucius Institute Board of Directors, Darika Lathapipat, President of Dhurakij Pundit University, Chang Yumeng, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, Song Ruoyun, First Secretary of Education Office of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, Wang Huichang, Representative of the Confucius Institute Headquarters Representative Office in Thailand, Jin Jianghong, Vice Principal of Tianjin Experimental High School, and principals and teachers from the Chinese and Thai schools, and representatives of relevant social group institutions. Lyu Jian, Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Zhong Yinghua, President of Tianjin Normal University sent congratulation letters.

Contestants were grouped into the Thai and non-Thai sections and were divided into five groups: primary school (grades1-3), primary school (grades 4-6), junior high school, senior high school, and college. After three rounds of competition—the basic Chinese knowledge test, writing and speech contests, a total of 500 people won the first, second, or third places of respective groups as well as excellence awards and consolation prizes. SuchaiKeatchaiyakon from Debsirin School in Bangkok won the championship of the senior high school group and Wanchaina from Chiang Mai University won the championship of the college group. They were awarded the trophies granted by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Gold Award Certificates, gold medals and Master Phraprommangkalachan scholarships to study in China.


Chinese speech contest

Phraprommangkalachan awarded the winners of the contest, and expressed the hope that through this contest, the Chinese language learners can demonstrate and test their own learning and make persistent efforts to achieve breakthroughs. He encouraged the contestants to continue their efforts to become friendly envoys of Thai-Chinese cultural exchanges and contribute to the social and economic development of Thailand.

Besides, the Maritime Silk Road Confucius Institute hosted the Confucius Institute Scholarship awarding ceremony. Phraprommangkalachan, Chang Yumeng, Song Ruoyun, and Wang Huichang awarded certificates to 12 Confucius Institute Scholarship winners, and hoped that everyone will cherish the opportunity to study in China, learn the Chinese language well, understand Chinese culture, and achieve success in learning to severe as envoys of friendship between the two countries.

Xu Qiuhua, the excellent alumni of the Maritime Silk Road Confucius Institute has won the fourth prize in the fifth “Chinese Bridge-Diamond Crown Jewel” Contest and gained the contest scholarship to study in senior high school and university in Tianjin, China. Talking about the “Chinese Bridge-Diamond Crown Jewel” Contest, she said that it is a chance to change her life. Nowadays, the number of contestants has increased year by year, and more and more students learn Chinese. Excellent Chinese learners gathered in the competition to learn from each other. She felt very lucky and proud that the contest is achieving continuing success and an increasing number of Chinese language learners benefit from it.

As the education cooperation between China and Thailand is deepening, the Chinese language education in Thailand is thriving thanks to the continuous efforts of Chinese language educators and lovers. The “Chinese Bridge-Diamond Crown Jewel” International Chinese Language Contest has been held for 16 consecutive years and attracted 75,000 participants in total with scale expanding and levels improving year by year. This event has received great attention and recognition from the Thai government and local citizens, and become a platform for Chinese language learners in Thailand or even the Southeast Asia to test their learning and display their talents.
