18th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students Visits Confucius Research Institute

On the afternoon of August 16th, 2019, 123 students from 112 divisions in 102 countries gathered at the Confucius Research Institute to attend the welcoming ceremony of the 18th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students hosted by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Hunan University. Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Kong Fanping, Member of the Standing Committee of Jining Municipal Communist Party Committee, Director of Organization Department of Jining city, and Secretary of the Party committee of the Confucius Research Institute, attended and delivered speeches. Yang Chaoming, Dean of Confucius Research Institute, presided over the ceremony.

Kong Fanping extended a warm welcome to the campers. She presented an introduction to the political, economic, cultural history and status quo of Jining city, the hometown of Confucius and Mencius, and the Experience Center of the Confucius Institute Headquarters. She also narrated the origin of activities of “Chinese Bridge” and the Confucius Research Institute, hoping that the campers could enjoy their up-close experience of the Chinese culture and embrace the charm of Confucius’ thoughts during the activity.

Zhao Guocheng thanked the Jining Municipal Committee and the Confucius Research Institute for their support and efforts in this activity and explained the great significance of “Chinese Bridge” in promoting friendly exchanges between China and foreign countries. He pointed out that language is a crucial tool for communication, and that it can greatly show how glamorous the country’s culture is. Mastering a language opens the doors for understanding a country’s culture. Chinese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and he hoped that the campers could become important messengers of cultural exchanges and spare no effort to foster mutual friendship.

Russian contestant Rusan, Champaion of the 17th Chinese Bridge “World University Students” Chinese Competition Champion, Russian player Ruslan, Egyptian player Dawei, the 15th African Champion and the camper Yang Huiqin from Thailand, spoke as camp representatives. They expressed their gratitude for the “Chinese Bridge” and their love for Chinese culture, and also cherished their opportunities to study and experience the culture in China. Therefore, they would be dedicated to friendly exchanges between China and other countries.

After the welcoming ceremony, the campers experienced the traditional Chinese culture in daily life at the Experience Center of the Confucius Institute Headquarters. They visited the exhibition areas such as Li Men Yi Lu (presenting Chinese traditional culture with electronic devices), Su Si Zhi Shang (presenting Chinese national culture) and Li Chuan Ji Shi (presenting traditional Chinese family rites). Instructed by the teachers, they also participated in several activities such asincense sealing, inscription rubbing and seal carving. The campers were impressed by the rich traditional culture presented in the experience center and were engrossed in this unique experience beyond time and space, discovering the profound and exquisite Chinese culture.
