The Second Symposium on China-India Exchange and Cooperation in Language Education Successfully Held

On the morning of August 11, the second meeting of the China-India High-Level People-to-People and Cultural Exchange Mechanism — The Second Symposium on China-India Exchange and Cooperation in Language Education was held in Beijing. The symposium, sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters, is themed as “Innovative Development of China-India Language Education”. More than 100 representatives, including heads of 8 Chinese universities and 18 Indian universities, directors of the Confucius Institute, directors of the Chinese Language Department, eminent experts and scholars, outstanding teachers and students attended the meeting. Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Ramesh Kanwar, Vice-Chancellor of Lovely Professional University (LPU), Zeng Jianping, President of Jinggangshan University, and Satyendra Kumar Upadhyay, Director of International Relations at SomaiyaVidyavihar and Ayurvihar, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony successively.

In his speech, Ma Jianfei pointed out that China and India, as countries with ancient civilizations and cultural superpowers, are neighbors geographically, partners of mutual-beneficial cooperation and friends forging ahead together. The China-India High-level People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges Mechanism is critical to implementing the important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and pushing forward bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges. The China-India Symposium on Exchange and Cooperation in Language Education is one of the important activities of the mechanism. Ma Jianfei underlined that the best way to promote friendship and communicate ideas is to learn the language and appreciate the culture of each other. The Confucius Institute Headquarters is willing to maintain close cooperation with the Indian educational community. While supporting Indian citizens especially young people in learning Chinese language, the Confucius Institute Headquarters actively promotes China-India language educational cooperation and people-to-people and cultural exchanges to a new level so as to make positive contributions to strengthening and developing bilateral relations.

Centered around the topic of “Innovative Development of China-India Language Education”, the symposium included 3 special sessions for heads of the Chinese and Indian language education institutions, experts and scholars on language and teachers and students respectively. The discussions put emphasis on new ideas and methods of carrying out the Indian language education in China and the Chinese language in India, especially the new ideas and methods of carrying out China-India exchange and cooperation in language education in the context of economic globalization and cultural diversification. Zeng Xiaochun, President of Yichun University, Han Guohe, Vice President of Zhengzhou University, Guo Dianhua, Vice President of Tianjin University of Technology, and Yu Longyu, Director of Center for Indian Studies of Shenzhen University, Jiang Jingkui, Director of Center for South Asian Studies of Peking University, Ye Hailin, Vice President of the National Institute of International Strategy and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Aditya Malik, President of K.R. Mangram University, Moody, Dean of Studies of O.P. Jindal Global University, Subaji, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at Vellore Institute of Technology, Gupta, Director of the Management Department at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Avijit Banerjee, Director of the Chinese Language & Culture Department at Visva-Bharati University, and B.R. Deepak, Director of the Center of Chinese & Southeast Asian Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) delivered speeches. Chinese and Indian representatives agreed that this symposium, novel in form and rich in content, has forged a closer friendship and enhanced exchanges and cooperation. As a high-level academic conference between the educational circles of the two countries in recent years, it is of profound significance to promoting the people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and India. The two sides agreed to call on the educational circles to promote cooperation and inter-connectivity, actively carry out language teaching and country-specific studies, foster mutual visits among young people, and train high-end talents to meet the growing needs of cultural exchange and cooperation in China and India.

During the symposium, a forum on language teaching in India was held, where directors of the Chinese language department from 11 Indian universities including JNU, IIT, and Visva-Bharati University as well as experts and scholars from Sichuan University, Shenzhen University and the Chinese Embassy in India conducted in-depth discussions on curriculum, teacher training, textbook development, and teaching method innovation in India’s Chinese language teaching. In addition, there were activities such as the Indian Chinese Teaching Resources Exhibition, the China-Indian Artist Exchange Exhibition, and the Video Appreciation of China-India Exchange and Cooperation in Language Education. The Confucius Institute Headquarters also signed an agreement with K.R. Mangram University to jointly build a Chinese language teaching center.

The Confucius Institute Headquarters, in collaboration with other parties, held the first China-India Symposium on Exchange and Cooperation in Language Education on December 20, 2018 in New Delhi, India. This year marks the second session of the symposium.
