Confucius Institute at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary

On July 30th, local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC) in Benin celebrated its 10th anniversary at the hall of the university, where joyous ornaments and decorations added to the gaiety of the occasion.

Before the celebration, the guests first enjoyed the “10th Anniversary Photography Exhibition of the Confucius Institute at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin”. 72 selected photos had marked those important moments over the past ten years since its establishment, showing its achievements in Chinese language teaching and culture exchanges of the Confucius Institute.

During the celebration, Segbo Julien, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at the UAC, delivered a welcome speech. He said that the Institute could hardly have those remarkable achievements over the past ten years without the strong support from people of all walks of life both from China and Benin. In the future, the Institute will continue to serve as a good platform for the friendly exchanges between China and Benin and do its best for the development of the two countries.


Site of the activity

Chinese Director Shen Lin read the congratulatory letter from Tang Boming, President of Chongqing Jiaotong University—Chinese partner of the UAC. In his letter, Tang Boming expressed his warm congratulations to the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute at the UAC. He said that since its establishment in 2009, the Institute has always upheld the concept of “communication, exchanges and win-win cooperation”. With the joint effort by Chongqing Jiaotong University and the University of Abomey-Calavi, their collaboration has become an important bridge between China and Benin for cultural exchanges and mutual learning of the two civilizations. The success cannot be done without staff’s unremitting efforts at the Confucius Institute, and the broad support from all parties. On behalf of Chongqing Jiaotong University, he would like to express his sincere gratitude, and he wished the Confucius Institute at the UAC a prosperous future.

After a passionate dance performance ended, Peng Jingtao, Chinese Ambassador to Benin, expressed in his speech that the Confucius Institute at the UAC, acting as an ambassador of culture and friendship, has always embraced openness and inclusiveness to present Chinese cultural philosophy of “harmony in diversity” to the outside world. Based on the reality of Benin, the Institute has actively carried out Chinese language teaching and cultural exchange activities, playing an important role in promoting exchanges and mutual learning of the two civilizations, and enhancing the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples as well. Since the friendly cooperation between China and Benin has entered the fast lane of comprehensive development, he hoped that the Confucius Institute at the UAC will make still further progress with Chinese language teaching serving as a good platform, aiming at closer ties between the peoples, continue to inherit and promote the philosophies of “harmony is the most precious” and “harmony in diversity”, so as to make contributions to the joint efforts of the Chinese and Benin people to build a community with shared future for mankind.


Dance performance

Maxime de CRUZ, Rector of the University of Abomey-Calavi, said that he has witnessed the development of the Confucius Institute over the past ten years. The University of Abomey-Calavi will continue to give full support for its development and further strengthen the cooperation with the Chinese side in the development of the Confucius Institute at the UAC and other fields and disciplines. He believed that the two sides will achieve greater success in the next decade.

In his speech, Josue AZANDEGB, Deputy Director of the Office of the Minister of Higher Education, expressed his heartful thanks to Chinese government and Chinese Embassy in Benin for their great support for the education in Benin. At the same time, he highly appreciated the achievements that the Confucius Institute at the UAC had made over the past ten years. He said that the Confucius Institute at the UAC is a model of China-Benin international cooperation in higher education, and has played a vital role in enhancing the friendship and partnership between the two peoples.

At last, the Confucius Institute at the UAC presented the “Outstanding Contribution Award” to the former rector of the UAC Brice Sinsin and the incumbent rector Maxime da CRUZ, the “Partner Award” to University of Parakou, the Superior School the Falcon, Yoma University, Estag Saint Christopher University Benin, the Association of Graduates from Chinese Universities Benin, China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification in Benin, the Overseas Chinese Association in Benin and the Chinese Enterprise Association, as well as the “Excellent Employee Award” to two foreign employees Hermice Dossa and Landry Medenou and three Chinese teachers Deng Ling, Luo Lu and Zhou Xiaoli.


Awarding ceremony

The guests present at the celebration include Moise Agbodand, Director of the Scholarship Department; Prosper Gandaho, Rector of the University of Parakou, Mumuni, President of the Association of Graduates from Chinese Universities Benin; Wei Jun, Cultural Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Benin and Head of Benin China Cultural Centre; Shi Yajuan, President of the Overseas Chinese Association in Benin; Chen Guoyou, Secretary General of China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification in Benin, and other distinguished guests. Over 400 people including the educators, students of the Confucius Institutes and other colleges and universities, and local residents in Benin attended the celebration.

This celebration is both a summary of the past and a starting point of the future. The Confucius Institute at the University of Abomey-Calavi will further deepen cultural exchanges between China and Benin and actively develop the teaching model of “Chinese Language +” so as to promote the localization of Chinese language teaching. It is believed that in the next decade, the Institute will achieve greater success.
