Opening Ceremony of “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp for Youths of the Belt and Road Initiative Partner Countries Held in Beijing

On August 5th, 2019, the opening ceremony of “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp for Youths of the Belt and Road Initiative Partner Countries was successfully held at Yifu lecture hall of Beijing Language and Culture University. The opening ceremony was attended by Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Director General of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Zhang Baojun, Vice President of Beijing Language and Culture University, diplomatic envoys from six countries, including Javier Sanchez, Consul of the Embassy of the Republic of Ecuador in China, Psoxay Psepvilayvont, Education and Culture Counselor of the Lao Embassy in China, Bapak Yaya Sutarya, Education and Culture Counselor of the Indonesian Embassy in China, and Muhammad Suleman Mahsud, Education Counselor of the Pakistani Embassy in China, and Mezyad Mashhour M. Alterkawi, Director of International Cooperation and Scientific Twinning Department at King Saud University.

Build a Bridge of Cultural Communication for a New Chapter of Win-win Cooperation

Zhao Guocheng pointed out in his speech that the Confucius Institute has been supporting the development of Chinese language teaching in countries along the Belt and Road Initiative and the educational and people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between China and those countries. The Chinese language teaching courses, various cultural activities and “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp organized by the Confucius Institute have been warmly welcomed by young students from all over the world and have promoted mutual understanding. This summer camp is an important measure to promote the joint communiqué of the 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. The organizers have arranged activities for campers with the theme of “Experience Chinese Martial Arts –Taiji”, hoping that campers can experience the Chinese martial arts and further understand the Chinese culture behind them, so as to enhance the mutual understanding between Chinese people and people from the Belt and Road Initiative partner countries. In the end, he wished the campers a happy and meaningful stay in China and the summer camp a great success.

Strengthen Interactions and Mutual Learning to Promote Development in the Spirit of the Belt and Road Initiative

On behalf of Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), Zhang Baojun expressed warm welcome to friends from home and abroad. He pointed out that the splendid cultures created by the Belt and Road Initiative partner countries are the shared legacy of mankind and should be developed through mutual exchanges and creation, so that they can renew its vitality in today’s world. Later, he introduced the characteristics of BLCU and the substantial work for exchanges and cooperation carried out by the school in recent years to actively serve the Belt and Road Initiative. He also mentioned that in the future, we should focus on the key points and work hard to promote the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Recall the Learning Experience in BLCU and friendship in the Belt and Road Initiative Related Activities

In his speech, Javier Sanchez said that the Belt and Road Initiative had deepened cooperation in various fields between China and Ecuador. The Confucius Institute opened a window for Ecuador to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture. Language brought the two civilizations even closer. Regardless of the distance among the Belt and Road Initiative partner countries, we all could be connected owing to the Belt and Road Initiative. And he talked about his learning experience at BLCU many years ago and extended his best wishes to this summer camp, hailing it as a symbol of the friendship among the Belt and Road Initiative partner countries.

Inherit the Spirit of Traditional Chinese Culture to Support the Development of the Belt and Road Initiative

Song Shishen, a student of the Confucius Institute at Hanoi University in Vietnam, expressed her admiration for Chinese history and culture from an early age and her appreciation of the inclusive spirit of modern China on behalf of all summer campers. She thanked the organizers for hosting this summer camp, which gave her an opportunity to experience Chinese culture and made friends with like-minded campers. She added that this experience would be an unforgettable memory in her life and she would work with friends from other countries to support the development of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Interpret Traditional Chinese Culture to Enhance the Friendship of the Belt and Road Initiative Partner Countries

Professor Fang Ming, the representative of experts at BLCU, Director of the Institute of Confucius and Confucian Culture, and President of Qu Yuan Society of China, interpreted the Great Harmony thought in Confucian culture and then pointed out that the construction of the community of shared future for mankind needs win-win cooperation, and the core of win-win cooperation was the equal and friendly relationship among people and among countries. Meanwhile, Professor Fang Ming talked about the homeland attachment and patriotism and then referred to the idea of Greta Harmony, which means building a community of shared future for mankind. Due to the connection of the Belt and Road Initiative, people in the Belt and Road Initiative partner countries have faced common opportunities and challenges. Only cooperation could bring win-win development. Professor Fang Ming explained the importance of establishing close and friendly relations among the Belt and Road Initiative partner countries through the specific introduction of the ethics and ideological concepts of family, kinship and neighbors in Chinese classical books.

Inherit the Spirit of the Silk Road to Strengthen the Friendship of Youths

At the end of the opening ceremony, camp representatives read out the Proposal for Language Communication and Mutual Learning of Cultures, and called for young people of the Belt and Road Initiative partner countries to learn the language and culture from each other, respect cultural diversity, actively participate in humanities exchange activities, and make contributions to the cultural exchanges and consolidation of friendship among them. Later, the guests present sent messages and best wishes to these young students. They said that future belonged to the youth and expressed their hope that in the future everyone could work together to build a community of shared future for mankind and make their contribution to the development of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp for Youths of the Belt and Road Initiative Partner Countries, sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters, provided an opportunity for 30 young people from 19 countries along the Belt and Road Initiative to gather in China and visit three famous historical and cultural cities in China, namely, Beijing, Zhengzhou and Jiaozuo, from August 2nd to 15th. They will visit historical sites, learn martial arts that embody traditional Chinese philosophical thoughts, like Taiji, and experience the profound traditional Chinese culture.

In the keynote speech at 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held in April 2019, President Xi Jinping said, “Connectivity is vital to advancing Belt and Road cooperation,” and “we need to build bridges for exchanges and mutual learning among different cultures”. And he encouraged the holding of such people-to-people exchange activities as the “Chinese Bridge” summer camp for young students. We believe that the young students participating in the “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp for Youths of the Belt and Road Initiative Partner Countries will take this opportunity to learn more about fine traditional Chinese culture and contemporary development of China, promote mutual learning of different cultures in their friendly exchanges, form profound friendship among young people, and truly uphold the spirit of Silk Road.

Proposal to Youths of the Belt and Road Initiative Partner Countries for Language Communication and Mutual Learning of Cultures

As the road of exchanges between the East and the West, the ancient Silk Road has formed the spirit of Silk Road featured by openness, inclusiveness, mutual learning, and mutual benefit through win-win cooperation. The Belt and Road Initiative today is the continuation and development of civilization exchanges along the ancient Silk Road. Youths are the main players in people-to-people exchanges as well as in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. In order to strengthen the language communication, mutual learning of cultures and mutual understanding of people among the Belt and Road Initiative partner countries and regions, we propose the following initiatives:

1.To learn languages of countries along the Belt and Road Initiative and serve as the bridge of language communication;

2.To respect the culture diversity and help build the bridge of cultural exchanges among countries along the Belt and Road Initiative;

3.To actively participate in people-to-people exchanges and be the young ambassador for promoting mutual understanding.
