2019 Joint Conference of Some Confucius Institutes in African Countries (Regions) Held in Madagascar

The 2019 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in African Countries (Regions) convened in Antananarivo, capital of Madagascar on July 26th. RAKOTOARISOA Jean-Eric, Director of the High Constitutional Court of Madagascar, Blanche Nirina Richard, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Yang Xiaorong, Chinese Ambassador to Madagascar, Yu Yunfeng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Tian Yanguang, Director of Administrative Affairs of Jiangxi Normal University (JNU), Ravelomanana Mamy Raoul, President of Antananarivo University (AU) attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

Blanche Nirina Richard recalled her involvement in the development of the Confucius Institute at AU with deep affection, and spoke highly of the achievements made by the Confucius Institute at AU and the University of Toamasina (TU). She said that the Madagascar government attaches great importance to promoting Chinese language in Madagascar. With the rise of the “Chinese craze” under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, it is hoped that the two countries will continue to maintain close cooperation and jointly run the Confucius Institute well to facilitate friendly exchanges in culture and education.

Yang Xiaorong said that she is happy to witness the rapid development of the Confucius Institute in Madagascar and the increasing popularity of Chinese language and culture. She spoke highly of the positive role that the Confucius Institute at AU and the Confucius Institute at TU play in promoting China-Madagascar people-to-people exchanges, in particular, among the young people of the two countries. She hoped that the Confucius Institute, while focusing on long-term development and enlarging its scale, can further improve the educational quality, deepen exchanges and thinking and pool the strengths to inject new impetus into better development of the Confucius Institute and make new contributions to China-Madagascar and China-Africa friendship.

Yu Yunfeng affirmed the new progress made by the Confucius Institutes in French-speaking African countries in terms of school-running scale, quality, characteristics and effects. He hoped that the Confucius Institute can achieve better internal growth to lay the foundation for a sustainable and high-quality development. He hoped that the Confucius Institute can constantly improve the quality of teachers, teaching resources and the localization of teaching methodologies, find the right position and promote the “Chinese +” for characteristic development. More efforts should be made in strengthening cooperation to advance regional coordinated development of the Confucius Institute, taking the reality of the Confucius Institutes in Africa into account, leveraging the development dividend brought by an era of internet, digitalization and intelligence, and making the most use of the digitalization to improve the education and teaching at the Confucius Institute.

Ravelomanana Mamy Raoul and Tian Yanguang reviewed the cooperation in running schools by AU and JNU. They were pleased with the results achieved by the Confucius Institute at AU and the role it plays in China-Madagascar relations, and expressed that both sides will forge closer cooperation to facilitate the development of the Confucius Institute at AU, making new contributions to consolidating and developing China-Madagascar friendship.

During the conference, Eva Zo Rasendra, Malagasy Director of the Confucius Institute at AU, Yu Lian, Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Abomey-Calavi, Gong Yani, Deputy Director of Personnel at China Nonferrous Metal Mining Corporation shared excellent cases on “coordinated development of the Confucius Institute”, “training of local teachers” and “local talent training supported by corporations” respectively. Participants also conducted in-depth discussion on topics such as “coordinated development of the Confucius Institute”, “characteristic development of the Confucius Institute” and “sustainable development of the Confucius Institute”. Moreover, the signing ceremony for the establishment of the Confucius Classroom at China-Zambia Vocational College of Science and Technology was held where Yu Yunfeng and Gong Yani signed the agreement on behalf of partners.

The conference was sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and organized by the Confucius Institute at AU, with more than 100 representatives from 19 Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) of 17 Africa countries (regions), Chinese-funded enterprises and media at home and abroad attending.
