On July 10th, the Confucius Institute at the University of Rwanda held performances in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of China and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute at University of Rwanda (CIUR).

Established in 2009, the CIUR is co-organized by the University of Rwanda and Chongqing Normal University. Formerly known as the Confucius Institute at University of Rwanda/College of Education, the CIUR now offers courses on various educational levels, including public education, private education, and vocational training.

Chen Zhijun, Vice President of Chongqing Normal University, delivered a speech before the performance. He said that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of China and 10th anniversary of the CIUR, the CIUR would seized the opportunity to share Chinese culture, enhance the friendship between China and Rwanda, and further stimulate Rwandans’ enthusiasm to learn and understand Chinese language and culture. Over the past ten years, the number of registered students has increased from over 200 in 2009 to over 5,100 at present.

George Njoroge, Dean of the College of Education at the University of Rwanda, said that the CIUR is established to provide students with more skills and knowledge and fully explore the academic potential of young Rwandans. Amid the context that skills and knowledge are needed to participate in global competition, learning Chinese culture and language can help young people to study in China and get more job opportunities.

Students from different teaching sites of the CIUR gave various performances, including Chinese chorus, Chinese song and dance, Taiji and cross talks, winning warm applause from the audience from time to time.
