On June 26, the handover ceremony of the “China-aided Confucius Institute at the National University of Laos” was held at the new multi-purpose hall of the Confucius Institute at the National University of Laos.

Somsavat Lengsavad, former Member of the Political Bureau of the Laos, former Deputy Prime Minister, Counselor of the Party Central Committee; Sengdeuane Lachanthaboune, Minister of Education and Sports of Laos; Soukkongseng Saignaleuth, Member of the Central Committee of Laos, former President of the National University of Laos; Phout Simmalavong, Vice Minister of Education and Sports of Laos; Somsy Gnophanxay, President of the National University of Laos; Kheanthong Sisouvong, Vice Chairman of the Committee of China-Laos Cooperation; Vichit Xindavong, former Vice Chairman of the Committee of China-Laos Cooperation, former Laos Ambassador to China; Xu Lin, Chinese State Council Counselor, former General Director of the Confucius Institute Headquarters; Jiang Zaidong, Chinese Ambassador to Laos; Wang Qihui, Business Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Laos; Xie Shangguo, President of Guangxi University for Nationalities; Yuan Gang, Vice President of China Jiangsu Construction Group Corporation. and other Chinese and Lao leaders attended the event. In addition, nearly 100 representatives from the relevant departments of the Lao Government, the Chinese institutions in Laos, the Lao Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Chinese Council and some Chinese-funded enterprises participated in the event. Bouadam Sengkhamkhoutlavong, Director of the Office of the National University of Laos, presided over the handover ceremony.

In his speech, Somsy Gnophanxay said that the Confucius Institute at the National University of Laos was a platform for educational and cultural exchanges between Laos and China. The new comprehensive building of the Confucius Institute is the most advanced building of the National University Dongdu Campus and is one of the most important achievements since the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between Laos and China. He promised to the Chinese side that he would make full use of the new building of the Confucius Institute to serve the people and meet the needs of students to learn Chinese and understand the Chinese culture. Somsy Gnophanxay also expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and the hard work of China Jiangsu Construction Group Corporation.

In his speech, Jiang Zaidong expressed his gratitude to the authorities of the Lao government and the cooperative institutions of the two sides and the construction company. He pointed out that the successful completion and handover of the new building was a valuable crystallization of the traditional friendship between China and Laos as well as a vivid embodiment of important achievements of the comprehensive cooperation and the spirit of a community of shared future. The Confucius Institute at the National University of Laos came into being with the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Laos. Therefore, the Confucius Institute comprehensive building followed the establishment of the community of shared future for China and Laos and its development would follow implementation of the community of shared future. Finally, he hoped that the Confucius Institute would take the completion of the new building as a new starting point, continue to work diligently, develop and innovate, and make new contributions to strengthening the traditional friendship between China and Laos and building a community of shared future for China and Laos.

In her speech, Sengdeuane Lachanthaboune expressed her appreciation to the leaders, teachers and staff of the National University of Laos and expressed her gratitude to the Chinese government and people for their friendly help. The Laos and China are connected by mountains and rivers and the people have been friendly neighbors since ancient times. The political systems of the two countries are the same and their goals are similar. She hoped that the new building of the Confucius Institute would become a platform for information exchange and research, a window for students to participate in Chinese language training and understanding Chinese culture and applying to study in China, a service station and communication platform with government departments and private institutions, so as to make greater contributions to economic and social development as well as talent cultivation in Laos.

In her speech, Xu Lin said that China and Laos were “good neighbors, good friends, good comrades, and good partners”. This year marks the China-Laos Tourism Year and more and more Chinese people are coming to Laos for a trip. The China-Laos railway will provide more convenient transportation conditions for the friendly exchanges between the two peoples; while the Confucius Institute serves as a bridge and link between the people of the two countries. Moreover, the completion of the new Confucius Institute building is a milestone that signifies closer friendship between China and Laos and a new witness to the friendship between the two peoples. Finally, she wished the Confucius Institute at the National University of Laos even more prosperous. It is said that in 2014, when Xu Lin met with Somsavat Lengsavad, in order to promote the long-term development of education in China and Laos, the two sides reached consensus on constructing a new building of the Confucius Institute at the National University of Laos and actively promoted the implementation of the project.


The new building of the Confucius Institute

The Confucius Institute at the National University of Laos is located in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. It was jointly established by Guangxi University for Nationalities and the National University of Laos. It was officially opened on March 23, 2010. The purpose of the Confucius Institute is to serve the society, promote Chinese language teaching and carry out educational exchanges between China and Laos. The “Chinese government-aided Confucius Institute at the National University of Laos” project is located in the Dongdu Campus of the National University of Laos. The Railway Engineering Consulting Group Co., Ltd. serves as the project management enterprise and constructed by Jiangsu Provincial Construction Group. The project covers an area of about 1.5 hectares with a total construction area of 6,390 square meters, including teaching rooms and related ancillary rooms. The project started on September 1, 2017 and was completed on April 30, 2019. It can be used by more than 5,000 students and 60 faculty members. It is widely believed that the completion and use of the new building of Confucius Institute will surely carry the development of Confucius Institute at the National University of Laos to a new level.
