Confucius Institute at Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences Celebrates 10th Anniversary

On June 14th, the Confucius Institute at Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences celebrated its 10th anniversary. More than 500 people attended the event, including Arayik, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia, Anna, Director of the Education Bureau of Yerevan, Harutyunyan, President of Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences, Gegham, Principal of Yerevan State University, Sargsyan, Vice-President of Russia-Armenian (Slavic) University, Gor, Armenian Director of the Confucius Institute, Tian Erlong, Chinese Ambassador to Armenia, Chen Zijiao, Dean of the School of Chinese Studies of Dalian University of Foreign Languages, Yang Meihua, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute in Armenia, presidents of universities, principals of primary and secondary schools, people from various fields, and teacher and student representatives from the Confucius Institute.

In his speech, Tian Erlong congratulated all the teachers and students of the Confucius Institute, expressed his sincere appreciation to friends from various fields for their positive and consistent contributions to China-Armenia people-to-people exchanges and cooperation, and highly praised the Confucius Institute for its achievements in the past decade in Chinese language teaching and culture promotion. He pointed out that the Confucius Institute, as a messenger of culture and friendship, has become a business card for cultural and educational cooperation. 2019 has witnessed a “bumper harvest” for both China and Armenia. The first ten years of the Confucius Institute has been a decade of cultivation as well as of harvest. He hoped that the Confucius Institute would take this celebration as a new starting point and strive to achieve greater success in the second decade. Tian Erlong sincerely wished that the Confucius Institute would do better and make greater contribution to people-to-people exchanges and friendly cooperation between the two countries.

Yang Meihua read a letter of congratulation from Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters. In his letter, Ma Jianfei fully affirmed the significant contribution made by the Confucius Institute with the support from Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences and Dalian University of Foreign Languages in teaching the Chinese language, organizing cultural events, compiling local Chinese textbooks, cultivating local teachers, as well as promoting educational and cultural communication between China and Armenia.

Chen Zijiao read a letter of congratulation from Liu Hong, President of Dalian University of Foreign Languages. In his letter, Liu Hong pointed out that the Confucius Institute at Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences has made fruitful achievements in the past decade. He hoped that the Confucius Institute could persist in its efforts in cultivating a friendly young generation of China and Armenia, strive to become a model for educational cooperation between the two countries, thus contributing to the Belt and Road Initiative.

Harutyunyan delivered a speech in which she said that the Confucius Institute was not only a model for educational cooperation between Armenia and China, but also a link of close cultural communication between the two countries, and a witness to friendship between Armenia and China. She also thanked all the Chinese teachers for their devotion.

Afterwards, the participants watched a documentary on the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute, reviewing the development of its history and achievements in the past decade. In the documentary, representatives from the Armenian education sectors extended their congratulations and spoke highly of the Confucius Institute’s achievements in Chinese language teaching and cultural exchanges between China and Armenia. Arayik said, “As more and more Armenians are now learning Chinese, the Confucius Institute has become the most important center for promoting Chinese culture and Chinese language teaching. The Armenian middle schools and universities now offer Chinese. The influence of Chinese is rising. On the basis of doing our daily work well, we will consistently make joint efforts with our Chinese partner and give our full support to the Confucius Institute and to strengthen the Armenia-China ties.”

A Phrasebook of Armenian, Chinese, Russian & English, which Yang Meihua and Armenian scholars spent over one year compiling, was introduced here. This multilingual book is the first of its kind in Central Asia and it is very practical. In addition, the Confucius Institute has printed a Handbook of the Tenth Anniversary of the Confucius Institute, which covers Chinese language teaching and cultural activities by the Confucius Institute and the project implementation of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, displaying the achievements made by the Confucius Institute in the past decade.

At the event, teachers and students from the Confucius Institute performed songs and dances such as “Three Joyous Treasures” and “Thousand-Hand Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva”, and presented the arts of calligraphy and tea, winning bursts of applause.

A review of the glorious course in the past decade is a summary as well as a beginning. The Confucius Institute of Armenia will take this as a new start to embark on a new journey and create a new splendor.
