Confucius Institute at Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences Holds Chinese Language Teaching Seminar

On June 13th, organized by the Confucius Institute at Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences, the Armenian seminar on Chinese language teaching under the background of the Belt and Road Initiative convened in the red conference hall of the university. Over 300 people attended the event, including Tamrazyan, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia, Yavrumyan, Vice Chairman of the Language Committee of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia, Anna, Director of the Education Bureau of Yerevan, Yeritsyan, former Minister of Education and Science of Armenia, Harutyunyan, President of the Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences, Sargsyan, Vice Chancellor of the Russia-Armenian (Slavic) University, Artur, Director of the Chinese Language and Cultural Center of Yerevan State University, Gor, Armenian Director of the Confucius institute, Chen Zijiao, Dean of the School of Chinese Studies of Dalian University of Foreign Languages. Yang Meihua, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute in Armenia, presidents of Armenian universities, principals of primary and secondary schools and representatives from education section as well as teacher and student representatives of the Confucius Institute.

At the opening ceremony, Tamrazyan delivered a speech in which he said that both Armenia and China had a long history and a rich culture. The Confucius Institute not only teaches Chinese but also promotes Chinese culture and Confucian ideas, and it has become a window for Armenians to glimpse into the Chinese culture. He hoped that this seminar would further deepen cultural exchanges and enhance friendship between the two sides.

Chen Zijiao read a letter of congratulation from Liu Hong, President of Dalian University of Foreign Languages. In his letter, Liu Hong fully affirmed the contribution made by the Confucius Institute in promoting Chinese language and culture in Armenia.

In their speeches, Anna and Harutyunyan expressed their hope that the seminar would promote the Chinese language teaching and further deepen exchanges in the field of humanities between Armenia and China.

At the seminar, three forums were held, including global situation of Chinese teaching, Armenian language policy and its implementation and the bottleneck and prospect of Chinese teaching in Armenia. At the first forum, Yavrumyan, with the “Armenian Language policy” as the theme, emphasized the unwavering status of Armenian as the official language, but added that this did not deny the promotion of foreign languages in the country, and all educational institutions could carry out foreign language teaching accordingly. Chen Zijiao, in her speech titled “Current Global Situation of Chinese Language Teaching under the Background of the Belt and Road Initiative”, expounded the present situation of Chinese language teaching at Confucius Institutes worldwide and opportunities and challenges faced by Confucius Institutes. In his presentation, Yeritsyan analyzed the Armenian language policy and contemporary foreign language demand”, explained the existing problems of language education in Armenia and proposed to set up an Armenian-Chinese translation school without using a third language. Sargsyan gave a comprehensive introduction to the development status of Chinese studies at the Russia-Armenian (Slavic) University. Yang Meihua gave a presentation titled “Current Situation of Chinese Language Teaching in Armenia”, in which she analyzed the existing difficulties and proposed novel solutions in the future. Artur introduced the situation of Chinese teaching and Chinese culture promotion at the Yerevan State University.

At the second forum, Sarukhanyan, Principal of No. 29 Senior High School in Yerevan, introduced difficulties and prospects of Chinese teaching at Armenian high schools. Nune, Dean of the Foreign Language Department of Yerevan Brusov State University, shared solutions to foreign language learning difficulties. Garegin, Principal of No. 135 Senior High School in Yerevan, introduced opportunities and challenges in Chinese teaching in Armenia. A representative from Chekhov High School presented difficulties and challenges in Chinese teaching in Armenia. Ani, Vice Principal of China-Asia Friendship School, gave a talk on “Chinese Serves as a Link between Armenia and China”. Shavarsh, a scholar of Yerevan Shamiyan Middle School, analyzed the development prospects and challenges in promoting Chinese Culture in Armenia. Liu Huarong, a professor from Dalian University of Foreign Languages, expounded the enlightenment of Confucianism to the development of contemporary society. Isabella, Director of China-Armenia Center for Science and Culture, talked on “Chinese Language Serves as a Link between Armenia and China” and elaborated the crucial role of Chinese in international cooperation within the framework of the New Silk Road. Principals and scholars expressed their opinions and offered suggestions for promoting Chinese language teaching and Chinese culture in Armenia.

At the third forum, representatives of Chinese and local teachers from the Confucius Institute gave the following presentations: “Overcome Difficulties in Chinese Grammar and Improve the Quality of Chinese Teaching”, “Some Questions about Raising High School Students’ Interest in Learning Chinese”, “Some Thoughts on Teaching Chinese to Armenian Children” and “A Survey on the Acquisition of Chinese Tones by Students at the Confucius Institute in Armenia”. They discussed the key and difficult issues in practical teaching and put forward effective solutions to the problems in Chinese teaching.

The seminar, held on the occasion marking the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute, with its largest scale, highest standard and most extensive topics, received nearly 100 papers from representatives, scholars and teachers of the Confucius Institutes in China and Armenia, covering a large variety of topics such as Armenian language policy and Chinese language teaching, reviews and prospects of Chinese teaching in Armenia, researches on second language teaching in Armenia, researches on ways of promoting Chinese language by Confucius Institutes, researches on Chinese teaching quality control by Confucius Institutes, case studies on teaching quality of excellent Confucius Institutes, bottlenecks and prospects of Chinese language teaching in Armenia and opportunities and challenges faced by Confucius Institutes in popularizing Chinese language and disseminating Chinese culture .

This seminar comprehensively summarized the development experience of Confucius Institutes in the past decade and figured out teaching patterns which may suit local national education policy and national culture characteristics. These ideas have important implications for the development of Chinese language teaching in the future and are beneficial to further improving the quality and level of Chinese teaching, cultivating Chinese language talents at a higher level and pushing forward future development of Confucius Institutes.
