On June 8th, local time, the Confucius Institute at the University of Ljubljana held the 2019 dragon boat racing in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Wang Shunqing, Chinese Ambassador to Slovenia, all the staff in the Embassy and the Chinese director and the foreign director of the Confucius Institute attended the event. The event attracted more than 400 Chinese and local people, creating an extraordinarily animated atmosphere.

In his opening speech, Wang Shunqing emphasized the very similar patriotism shared by China and Slovenia while telling stories of celebrated patriots of the two countries. She remarked that on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, this event is of great significance for promoting the cultural exchanges between China and Slovenia. Meanwhile, Wang Shunqing expressed his best wishes for the success of the event.

Twelve teams participated in the competition, including the team of the Chinese Embassy in Slovenia, the team of the Confucius Institute at the University of Ljubljana teachers, the team of the Confucius Institute students, the team of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Ljubljana staff, the team of the Faculty of Arts teachers and students, the team of the Slovenia Canoe Federation, the team of the Slovenian Chinese Merchant’s Association, the team of the Koper Qi Club team, the team of the Hisense Slovenia and teams of students from the University of Ljubljana and people from all walks of life.


Fighting in the fierce competition

Amid rhythmic and encouraging drums, all the participating teams fought hard to row and made concerted efforts, bravely marching forward. The tense atmosphere triggered bursts of applause from the audience by the riverside. After three rounds of fierce competition in preliminaries, semi-finals and finals, the team of the Slovenia Canoe Federation won the championship.

On that day, the Confucius Institute set up handcraft workshops of traditional Chinese culture at the site, which included activities like making dragon masks, dragon boats, bracelets for Dragon Boat Festival and paper Zongzi, allowing local people to experience the charm of traditional Chinese art and festivals. The Confucius Institute also held a Chinese food festival with five local Chinese restaurants. Traditional Chinese food such as Zongzi, roast duck, fried dumplings, fried rice noodles and spicy skewers were offered, making people glut their stomachs and give continuous praises.

The dragon boat racing during the Dragon Boat Festival drew a happy ending amid laughter and cheerful voices. It demonstrates the excellent organizing ability of the Confucius Institute. The event not only promotes traditional Chinese culture, but also deepens the friendship between Chinese people and Slovenian people, thus winning high praise from all sectors of society.
