From June 6 to 7, 2019, European Confucius Institutes held a joint conference at the University of Aveiro in Portugal to discuss the issue of building a Chinese language teaching curriculum system of Confucius Institutes. The conference was organized by the Confucius Institute of the University of Aveiro. Joao Costa, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Education, Paulo Jorge, President of the University of Aveiro, Jose Vieira, Deputy Mayor of Sao Joao da Madeira, and Zhou Gaoyu, the representative of the Chinese Embassy to Portugal, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

More than 40 foreign and Chinese directors of 21 Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) from 16 European countries and the delegation from the Confucius Institute Headquarters attended the conference. The conference had several sessions, including the field trip to teaching sites, excellent cases sharing, panel discussion, and teaching outcome presentation. On the afternoon of June 6th, the participants visited the teaching site at Anta Primary School in Espinho City, a subordinate school to the Confucius Institute of the University of Aveiro, and observed a demo lecture collaborated by a Chinese and a Portuguese teacher. On June 7th, the participants shared experiences and offered suggestions on language proficiency standards, course outline development, teaching evaluation standards and other issues. They further exchanged ideas about how to improve local teaching materials, develop characteristics of Confucius Institutes, ameliorate teaching management, language testing and evaluation methods, and diversify teaching designs, providing useful reference and inspiration for establishing an efficient Chinese language teaching system of Confucius Institutes.
