President of King Saud University Visits Confucius Institute Headquarters and Signs a Cooperation Agreement on Provision of Chinese Language Instructors

On June 10th, Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, met with Badran Alomar, President of King Saud University (KSU), and his delegation at the Confucius Institute Headquarters. At the end of the meeting, the two sides signed “Agreement on Provision of Chinese Language Instructors between Confucius Institute Headquarters and King Saud University”, which was witnessed by Turki Mohammed Al-Madi, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to China, and Liu Li, President of Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU). Ma Jianfei, Badran Alomar and Liu Li delivered warm speeches.

At his speech, Ma Jianfei pointed out that, during President Xi Jinping’s meeting with Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, in Beijing this February, Crown Prince wished to introduce Chinese language into the curriculum of primary and secondary schools as well as colleges and universities in Saudi Arabia. For this purpose, relevant departments and institutions of China and Saudi Arabia work closely with each other in the past three months. Today, the Confucius Institute Headquarters and KSU jointly signed an important cooperation agreement. These are the practical actions and important measures taken by both sides to implement the important consensuses reached by heads of the two countries and to support Saudi Arabia in carrying out Chinese language education. Next, the Confucius Institute Headquarters stands ready to work closely with KSU and other relevant sides of Saudi Arabia and conduct in-depth cooperation on establishing Confucius Institutes, cultivating local Saudi Arabic teachers, developing Arabic Chinese textbooks, etc.

Badran Alomar expressed his gratitude to the Confucius Institute Headquarters for the warm reception and he appreciated the sound reputation and high-quality work of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and affirmed the important consensuses reached by the two sides. He noted that KSU is the first university in Saudi Arabia to offer Chinese language courses and it is currently preparing for the establishment of the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture. This important agreement signed by the two sides today will help colleges and universities better carry out Chinese language teaching and make contributions to the development of bilateral relations.

At his speech, Liu Li expressed his warm congratulations on the signing of the cooperation agreement between the Confucius Institute Headquarters and KSU. He said that, boasting a long history and rich resources of the researches of Arabic language and culture, BLCU has worked closely with relevant educational institutions in Saudi Arabia in recent years. Next, he hoped that BLCU can conduct in-depth discussions with KSU on jointly establishing Confucius Institutes and other affairs.

Founded in 1957, KSU is the oldest and most famous university in Saudi Arabia, with over 70,000 students. According to the agreement signed today, the Confucius Institute Headquarters will dispatch two to four Chinese language instructors to KSU to provide assistance in carrying out Chinese language teaching and establishing the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture in KSU. So far, the Ministry of Education of Saudi Arabia has set up Chinese Coordination Committee. It is currently drawing up plans on jointly enhancing the training of Chinese language instructors with the Confucius Institute Headquarters and accelerating Chinese language teaching in primary and secondary schools as well as colleges and universities in Saudi Arabia.
