Confucius Classroom at Mount Clear College Celebrates UN Chinese Language Day

On May 21st, the Confucius Classroom at Mount Clear College held a celebration of the UN Chinese Language Day of 2019. About 80 people from three local schools and the University of 3rd Age took part.

Jenny Bromley, Vice-Principal of Mount Clear College and Director of the Confucius Classroom, gave a warm welcome to participants. She also introduced the UN Chinese Language Day, the Confucius Classroom and the importance of learning Chinese. Brad McCall, Vice-Principal of Mount Clear College, offered his congratulations. Jijun Yang, Chinese Director of the Confucius Classroom, talked about the specific arrangements and procedures of the event.

Three students coming back from a recent journey in China demonstrated how to play Chinese yoyo, which received a lot of enthusiastic applause. Then Jenny Gao, a Chinese student, played the Pipa, a traditional Chinese musical instrument. After that, the students from Mount Clear Pleasant Primary School and Mount Clear College sang some Chinese songs and those from LalLal Primary School danced to the music of “Seaweed”, which is popular in China, and then two students coming back from the journey showed their photos taken in different places in China.

Then, all the participants started their experience of the Chinese culture, some wrapping dumplings, some learning Chinese calligraphy, Fan Dancing and Ribbon Dancing, and others learning Taichi and Chinese martial art.

Finally, Jijun Yang told a story of “Mr. Dongguo and a Wolf”to all the participants. His exaggerated facial expressions and movements attracted all the audience.
