The 2019 Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competitions for Foreign Secondary Students and Foreign College Students in Peru (6th AECP-Liqun “Chinese Bridge”) was held on June 1st, 2019 in the Friendship Center of Lima. The competition was hosted by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and the Chinese Embassy in Peru, organized by the Confucius Institute at the Catholic University of Peru, co-organized by the Confucius Institute at Ricardo Palma University, the Confucius Institute at Santa Maria Catholic University, the Confucius Institute at Piura University, and the 23rd John Wolverine, Colegio Peruano Chino Diez de Octubre, and the Confucius School, and sponsored by China Peru Investment Development Association and Zhejiang China Tobacco Industry Co., Ltd. More than 400 watched the competition, including Li Wei, Chargé d’ Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Peru, He Wei, Cultural Counselor, Hao Qinmei ,Commercial Counselor, Kong Ai’min, President of the China Peru Investment Development Association and other person in charge in the China enterprises and the overseas Chinese groups in Peru.

The Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition was divided into a secondary student group and a college student group. 15 contestants from different places of Peru participated in the competition. The competition includes three sessions altogether: speech contest with the topic of “One World, One Family”, Chinese Culture and Chinese Knowledge Quiz, and Talent Performance.

In the speech session, the contestants shared their stories with China and Chinese, demonstrating their enthusiasm for Chinese and China and depicting the ancient Chinese idea of “One World, One Family” in their own minds. One contestant said, “Chinese is a bridge that connects China and us.”

In the Q&A session, the players were fully prepared and confident, showing their understanding of China and Chinese culture.

In the talent show, the audience enjoyed the touching music of Guzheng, the beautiful Chinese songs, the hilarious cross talk, the passionate Xinjiang folk dance, the soft classic dance, the Taiji fan with softness and hardness, and the unique folk art Diabolo. All contestants were well prepared to show their passion for Chinese culture and all of them won the audience’s warm applause.

After a fierce competition, Luis Guillermo Diaz from the Colegio Peruano Chino Diez de Octubre and Aron Cotrina Gomez from the Confucius Institute at Ricardo Palma University won the first prize of high school group and university group respectively.

In the award ceremony, Li Yun said that language was the bond that spans time and space. The “Chinese craze” has continued to heat up all over the world, and more and more Peruvian youth are learning Chinese. As of 2018, more than 36,000 people registered for Chinese courses at 4 Confucius Institutes in Peru, and 15 schools including universities, high schools and elementary schoolsprovide independent Chinese teaching.

Kong Ai’min, Deng Rupeng, Foreign Director of the Confucius Institute at the Catholic University of Peru, and Wu Houfu, General Manager of Zhejiang China Tobacco Industry Co., Ltd. also delivered speeches respectively. They said that the contestants of Chinese Bridge became better and better, and their performances were getting more and more exciting. At the same time, they all have a positive view on the future development of Chinese in Peru.
