The Confucius Institute at the University of Novi Sad (CIUNS) in Serbia celebrated its fifth anniversary on May 24th.

Bojan Tubić, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development of Serbia, said in his speech that Confucius Institutes have always been a symbol of friendliness, peace and wisdom. For five years, the CIUNS has developed into a bridge linking the cultural communication between Serbia and China, and together with the Confucius Institute in Belgrade, it has helped students and all other Serbians get close to Chinese language and rich Chinese culture. He said, “‘Chinese craze is getting increasingly popular in schools and universities of Serbia, which is very exciting. Since the Memorandum of Cooperation was signed with China in 2012, many elementary and secondary schools in Serbia have offered optional course of Chinese language. Starting from next school year, the Ministry of Education plans to take Chinese language as an optional course in all secondary schools.”

Cui Yinglan, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Serbia, noted that, for the past five years, the CIUNS has achieved constant development and it proactively supported and participated in the projects of Research Institute on Belt and Road at the University of Novi Sad, which greatly enhanced Serbians’ understanding of China and Chinese culture, promoted the exchanges of and cooperation on education, culture, science, technology and other fields between the two countries, and deepened the traditional friendship between China and Serbia.

Chen Hui, Chinese Director of the CIUNS, said in his speech that, as the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative is constantly advanced and the cooperation on various fields between the two countries is continuously deepened, young people who learn Chinese today will become a fresh force boosting China-Serbia friendly communication in the future.

At the cerebration, Serbian students presented excellent artistic performance. Students of a local kindergarten in Novi Sad sang the Chinese children’s song “Little Stars”. Students of Confucius Classroom of Gymnasium of Karlovci (Karlovci Grammar School) recited “The Analects of Confucius”, presented Tai Ji performance and sang Chinese songs, winning thunderous applauses from the audience.

The CIUNS is established based on Chinese language teaching, sticks to cultural communication, achieves civilization dialogues, and builds a full-pledged brand image of Confucius Institutes. It has gradually become an important force spreading Chinese culture in Serbia.
