Confucius Institute in Krakow in Poland Holds Unveiling Ceremony of Model Confucius Institute and Launching Ceremony for New Teaching Area

On May 15th, the opening ceremony of the Model Confucius Institute and the launching ceremony for the new teaching site were held in the Confucius Institute of Krakow in Poland. Liu Guangyuan, Chinese Ambassador to Poland, Wojciech Nowak, President of Jagiellonian University and Member of the Confucius Institute Headquarters Council, Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Jia Dezhong, Vice-President of Beijing Foreign Studies University cut the ribbon together and delivered speeches for the new teaching area of the Confucius Institute in Krakow. Wojciech Nowak, President of Jagiellonian University and Member of the Confucius Institute Headquarters Council, and Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters together unveiled the Model Confucius Institute nameplate for the Confucius Institute in Krakow.

Liu Guangyuan said that the Model Confucius Institute is an important flagship to guide the development of Confucius Institutes all around the world, which would play a leading role in the development of more Confucius Institutes. It is hoped that on the new starting point, the Confucius Institute in Krakow can better meet the needs of the Polish people to study the Chinese language and culture, and contribute to the promotion of the mutual appreciation of China and Poland.

Wojciech Nowak said that the construction of the Model Confucius Institute in Krakow was strongly supported by the Confucius Institute Headquarters. Jagiellonian University attaches great importance to the construction of the Model Confucius Institute and will continue to support the development of the Confucius Institute in Krakow and make Confucius Institute better in the future.

Zhao Guocheng said that over the past years, the Confucius Institute in Krakow had made great progress, opening-up and innovation, continuously expanded the scale, and significantly improved the quality of teaching. A great deal of work has been done in response to the Belt and Road Initiative and in promoting the Polish people’s understanding of traditional Chinese medicine. Many high-end lectures, exhibitions, and seminars were held. The Confucius Institute in Krakow also held “Contemporary China” advanced research projects in cooperation with Jagiellonian University, which played an important typical exemplary role in the construction of Confucius Institutes all over the world. He hoped that, firstly, the Model Confucius Institute in Krakow should continue to improve the quality of teaching, expand the scale for the Polish people to learn Chinese, understand China, and provide more and better services. Secondly, the Confucius Institute in Krakow should highlight the characteristics of running schools, strengthen the study of contemporary China, and build a leading contemporary Chinese research base in Central and Eastern Europe and even in the world. Thirdly, the Confucius Institute in Krakow should give full play to the exemplary role and actively lead and promote the healthy and sustainable development of Confucius Institutes all over the world.

Jia Dezhong said that Beijing Foreign Studies University would continue to set the support on the construction of the Confucius Institute in Krakow as an important development strategy, provide high-quality management teaching talents and educational research resources, and fully support the construction of the Model Confucius Institute in Krakow so that it can give full play to its exemplary role.

Started running in 2006, the Confucius Institute in Krakow, co-founded by Beijing Foreign Studies University and Jagiellonian University in Poland, is the first Confucius Institute in Poland. The Confucius Institute in Krakow holds nearly 100 activities about Chinese culture every year, which have formed a series of cultural activities brands. Chinese courses at all levels are offered by the Confucius Institute in Krakow to local universities, primary and secondary schools and communities, which promote the exchanges and cooperation between local and Chinese universities. In 2016, Jagiellonian University specially set up a site of more than 1,000 square meters for the construction of the Model Confucius Institutes. The Model Confucius Institute is located in the center of Krakow, including multifunctional auditorium, reading rooms, conference rooms, a lot of classrooms and offices. The whole institute is decorated simply but elegantly, and combines the traditional cultural elements of China and Poland. Since the Confucius Institute Headquarters began the Model Confucius Institute project in 2013, 50 Model Confucius Institutes have been built around the world, including 18 in Europe.
