Confucius Institute at UCSC Milan Campus Holds 10th Anniversary Celebration

On May 14th, local time, the 10th anniversary celebration of the Confucius Institute at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore UCSC was held at the Gemelli campus of UCSC Milan Campus. Franco Anelli, President of UCSC Milan Campus, Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Liu Li, President of Beijing Language and Culture University, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches.

In his speech, Ma Jianfei said that China and Italy enjoy a long history of profound exchanges. As early as over 2000 years ago, China and Italy were closely connected by the Silk Road, and many famous people have emerged to make great contributions to promoting exchanges and mutual learning between Eastern and Western civilizations, such as Marco Polo, Matteo Ricci and so on. Today, countless contemporary “Marco Polos” continue to be active in the cause of friendly exchanges between China and Italy, and the Confucius Institute serves as one of the most important bridges. As it is written here, ‘connecting China (Il tuoponte con la cina)’, the Confucius Institute is a bridge of friendship between China and foreign countries, as well as an important platform for people all over the world to understand China and learn the language. He pointed out that over the past decade or so, with the support of presidents, teachers, as well as Milan and Lombardy, the Confucius Institute at UCSC Milan Campus has made remarkable achievements and become one of the most distinctive Confucius Institutes in the world. Not long ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Italy and jointly drew a blueprint for China-Italy relations with Italian leaders, leading China-Italy relations into a new era. He hoped that the Confucius Institute at UCSC Milan Campus will make more contributions to the friendly exchanges between China and Italy in various fields.

In his speech, Franco Anelli welcomed the delegations from the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Beijing Language and Culture University, and also said that UCSCMilan Campus is very willing to continue to cooperate with the Confucius Institute Headquarters and Beijing Language and Culture University to make more contributions to the friendly exchanges between the two countries.

Liu Li said in his speech that over the past decade, under the guidance of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and with the concerted efforts of Chinese and foreign hosting universities, the Confucius Institute at UCSC Milan Campus has played an active role in deepening the understanding and enhancing friendship between peoples of the two countries. It can be said that this decade has laid the brilliant new path of cultural integration between China and Italy; this decade has also witnessed the concerted efforts made by China and Italy. At the same time, Liu Li also pointed out that the friendship between China and Italy is rooted in the long history of exchanges. Beijing Language and Culture University and UCSC Milan Campus in Italy will pass on the traditional friendship, shoulder the responsibility of the times, jointly write the brilliant chapter of peace between the East and the West, and make lasting efforts and positive contributions to promoting the continuous sublimation of China-Italy friendship on the platform of the Confucius Institute.

After the ceremony, Ma Jianfei, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Franco Anelli, President of UCSC Milan Campus, signed an agreement on continued cooperation of the construction of the Confucius Institute at UCSC Milan Campus. Liu Li, President of Beijing Language and Culture University, and Franco Anelli, on behalf of both sides, signed a memorandum of cooperation between Beijing Language and Culture University and UCSC Milan Campus.

Since its establishment in 2009, the Confucius Institute at UCSC Milan Campus has set up four teaching sites and three Confucius Classrooms in Milan and its surrounding urban areas, and has offered a wide variety of Chinese language and cultural courses, meeting the needs of students with different language levels, ages and cultural interests. At the same time, the Confucius Institute at UCSC Milan Campus also provides Chinese language examination service, and hosts teacher training, study in China program, cultural experience and other activities, providing quality services of Chinese learning and cultural exchanges for people in Lombardy and other areas. By the end of May 2019, the number of registered students at the Confucius Institute at UCSC Milan Campus has reached more than 15,000 while the number of cultural experience participators reaching more than 60, 000. Over the past decade, the Confucius Institute at UCSC Milan Campus has been exploring ways to provide better teaching resources and services. Confucius Institutes will remain true to its original aspiration, keep the missionfirmly in mind, and forge ahead with great determination.
