Delegation of Confucius Institute Headquarters Visits Confucius Institute at University of Milan and Attends Chinese Teaching Symposium in Lombardia

On May 13th, local time, the delegation of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, headed by Deputy Chief Executive Ma Jianfei, visited the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan, signed the agreement of further cooperation on developing the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan with President Elio Franzini, and attended the Chinese Teaching Symposium in Lombardia.

Firstly, the delegation had a symposium with faculty members and teachers of the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan. Jin Zhigang, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan, reported on teaching results, cultural events, main achievements, media coverage and development experiences during the past several years.

Ma Jianfei highly appreciated the development of the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan. He pointed out, “the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan achieved progress due to great timing, positioning and human relationship. By great timing I mean that, as China-Italy relationship grows tighter and exchanges between the two countries strengthens, Italy enjoys great advantage in Chinese teaching, which provides sound external conditions for the development of Confucius Institute; by great positioning I mean that, the Confucius Institute gives great concern on local demands and characteristics of Milan; and by great human relationship I mean that, the key of success lies in the close cooperation among Chinese and foreign directors as well as teachers of the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan”

Later, Ma Jianfei held a meeting with President Elio Franzini. They exchanged ideas on the development of the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan as well as the educational and cultural exchanges between China and Italy during the past decade, and reached consensus on further constructing and developing Confucius Institute. In the end, with the presence of both Chinese and Italian sides, they signed a new 10-year agreement of further cooperation on developing the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan.

On the same day, the delegation attended the Chinese Teaching Symposium in Lombardia. The attendees of this symposium included: Baldi Antonella, Vice President of University of Milan, Guan Haibo, consul of the Chinese Consulate-General in Milano, Chinese and foreign directors of the Confucius Institute, presidents and Chinese teachers from over 20 universities and high schools in Lombardia.

In his speech, Baldi Antonella said that the first 10-year cooperation between the Confucius Institute and the University of Milan was a complete success. During this period, the Chinese teaching in Lombardia has achieved great progress, and the University of Milan is looking forward the next 10-year cooperation and hoping to continue it in the future.

Ma Jianfei pointed out in his speech that this symposium allowed the delegation to have a better understanding of the current status and demands of Chinese teaching in Milan, and communicate with presidents and teachers face to face, which is very helpful for the Confucius Institute Headquarters to improve its capacity and service quality. He spoke highly of the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan, considered it a very successful Confucius Institute with its own characteristics, and also delivered his gratefulness to the support from the Italian side.

Teachers’ representatives from the Confucius Classrooms and teaching sites in the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan discussed and delivered reports on such topics as the development of Chinese teaching in the University of Milan, the construction of the Confucius Classrooms and teaching sites, and directions of future development. They also proposed suggestions to the Confucius Institute Headquarters.

During the past 10 years, the Confucius Institute at the University of Milan has done great efforts and delivered excellent results. Standing at the starting point of another 10 years, the Confucius Institute is embracing a greater future featuring both opportunities and challenges. Through this visit, the delegation of the Confucius Institute Headquarters communicated with local authorities about the new strategies and paths for the future development of the Confucius Institute, pointing and paving the way for the next 10-year cooperation.
